Re: Wow...renting an apartment...
I think 1300 bucks for a one bed is absolutely ridiculous. My sister is paying this living by herself. how are people supposed to pay this amount of rent and save any money?? it's craziness, but people have to pay it because they have no choice , I totally agree with you. My Mortgage and maint fee is 1300.00 and I own the place! can't imagine spending the same amount to rent someone elses crummy apt.

I pay $1569 for a one BR in Patch. I pay out of that 1569 a $300 fee a month for a 6 month lease. Rent is not cheap here. If you are paying so little, why move? My mom is in Fairfield too , and she pay 1325 for a one bedroom. So, seems you are getting away with Murder.
In Patchogue??!! Am I reading this right?!?!? that's just insane, Sorry you are paying that much money for a one bedroom apartment!

To be fair, you are going to be hard pressed to find a place to buy now in Long Island that will only run you $1300 a month including your maintenance. Maybe a co-op.
Also while you own your own place for that, you also can't just get up and move when you feel like it. You would have to go through the process of selling your place. Not easy in this market, especially if you only have a 1br.

Re: Wow...renting an apartment...
Not even a co-op these days.....our co-op (a 3BR) is $2300/month. That includes our mortgage payment and our common charges.
ETA: we just tooks our off the market and were considering renting it out, but we could never rent it for enough to JUST cover the costs, nevermind making a profit. So it wasnt worth it to even do so. I imagine some owners are in a similar situation....obviously not those with basement apts, but co-ops or renting out a house. They want to or have to move, but the market is slow and to just cover the costs, it would cost a renter a fortune.

Re: Wow...renting an apartment...
I happen to agree with you on some level.. 1300 for a basement which is illegal is definitely absurd. $900 for a studio however, IF it's in a modern and clean condition is reasonable.
