WTHeck...Tax Accountants????
Went to e-file our return this morning and got an error back stating that DH's (primary/filing jointly) SS# is already on file as a secondary for return on file...
NOW what do we do?
Our Accountant said we'll have to mail our returns with a copy of his SS#...but I think it's nonsense....isn't there someone we can speak to at the IRS as we feel it may have been in error?
Anyone? TIA!

Re: WTHeck...Tax Accountants????
My brother had an issue with his SS# and as long as he filed with a paper copy he had no issue. It would be faster to send in the papercopy and work this out after it is sent in then trying to fix it so you can efile.

I'm not really sure I understand what the situation is, but in all honesty, this is a busy time for the IRS and the problem may take a while to get resolved (as you may have heard, they are not the easiest people to deal with). I would mail in a hard copy (don't forget to sign it!) and try to resolve the issue afterwards.

this is possible, tho very stupid of someone to do, since the chance of getting caught is relatively high.

Re: WTHeck...Tax Accountants????
I have had this issue before with a client---when he went to file we had the same reject notice. We filed the paper return and it was fixed.
I think sometimes the computer can make mistakes--and this might be a case like that. You can try and contact someone at the IRS--but you will probably have a hard time getting any info past the rejection notice, because of the busy time as well as they might not have all the info processed yet.

This is exactly what happened.
We called the IRS Hotline - and they were SUPER friendly and VERY helpful. Told us to file by mail, and we'll be fine.
Thanks everyone!

Stupid? Yes.
Chances of getting caught high? Eh, yes and no. You're not likely to get caught through to IRS.
Thousands of illegal immigrants pay taxes every year. In fact, paying taxes is important to prove if you plan to ever apply for asylum or something like that.
It's stupid to do it using someone else's SS#, but people do it all the time and don't get caught... The IRS honestly is more concerned with getting its money than it is with citizenship or residency status. ETA - I'm sure that in this instance, it's a lot more likely that it's just a computer or system glitch.
