WWYD - 2nd birthday party dilemna

DS will be 2 yrs old next month and I would really like to throw him a birthday party.

So, here is my dilemna. My family is completely unreliable and have the potential to bail on the party last minute. They will most likely only come if the location is close enough and convenient enough that they don't really have to make a huge effort. They live in Queens/Bkyn/NJ. Total invitees would be roughly 4 families and a couple of adults, totalling 12 adults, 5 kids.

DH's family will absolutely come no matter what or where the party is. They live in Oakdale (suffolk). DH's side is 3 families totalling 6 adults, 5 kids.

I live in Queens. My house is too small to have all of them there but convenient for my family.

SIL has access to a beachclub in Suffolk by my IL's where there is a huge grassy area, small playground and indoor party room.

This is where I had DS' first party last year. From my side of the family, 4 adults showed up with their 2 kids. The other 8 adults and 3 kids bailed the day of.Chat Icon It's between an hour to 1 1/2 hr drive for my family to get there.

If you were me, would you have DS' 2nd birthday party in Queens, with the potential of everyone showing up and not having enough room in your house

or

try the beach club again, risk noone from my family showing up again (and basically making me look like an a$$) but the place is way better suited for a party and much more fun for the kids (if they show)

The only ones who would look like A$$es would be the ones who don't show up. I'd have it at your IL's. Have Fun!

I agree - have it in Suffolk. Whoever comes, comes. Your DS will still have fun even if they dont show - it will bother you more than him. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd do it in Suffolk. We've traveled that far for birthday parties before and will again!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry that you have to worry about that. Chat Icon
I would have it at the beach club and let the kids have a great time, it sounds amazing. You don't look bad, the people who bailed do.

I would have a talk with them and tell them how hurt you were last year, and your really hope they make it this year. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks!Chat Icon

I know you're right. I really have to get it in my head that this is to make HIS day as fun as possible, and not to make things easier for my family. if they want to be there, they will come.

I just feel like my family thinks I am "choosing" DH's family over them by making it more convenient for my IL's and less convenient for them.

Is there somewhere in NJ near your family you can do it this year?

I emailed and called one of my SIL (my side of the family), saying that i was trying to look for b-day party locations that would be more convenient for everyone and asking for suggestions and she never responded to my email or phone. This was a week ago.

I guess I should take that as a hint.
