WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
So, one of my big fears is having the baby delivered using forceps or vaccuum extraction. My reason is that I work with special needs children and many of them had complications during birth and resulted in forcep or vaccuum used during delivery. Now, I know that plenty of "normal" babies are deilvered that way, I can't help but have it in the back of my mind. One of the doctors in my practice that I met with today said that he was trained to use forceps and would use them if the mother could no longer push or if the baby was in distress and that was the fastest way out. However, he said that my consent would be asked before any of these choices were made. How do you ladies feel about this sort of thing? Would you let the doctor deliver using forceps or vaccuum or opt for the c-section? Any BTDT moms have either?

Re: WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
I am a special ed teacher so I understand about worrying about things going wrong. But most of my students who had issues at birth were not from forceps or vaccuuming it was more like losing oxygen, cord around the neck, etc.
I was born with forceps and other than 2 black and blues on my head I was fine. I don't think a dr would even consider using them unless it was medically necessary and if it was I would rather worry about a slim risk from forceps than maybe needing an emergency c-section or the baby going into distress

Thanks for your response. It is so hard working with kids with special needs and not thinking about this stuff!

Re: WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
I hadn't really thought about complications from forceps or vacuums, but I will say that my DH was a forcep baby and I can say that he suffered no ill effects—except that he temporarily looked like a cone-head right after birth (or so his family teases him!).

Re: WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
The dr used the vacuum on my daughter and she is fine the dr didn't ask me and my husband freaked out a little. But in the end they could not get her out without giving me an episiotomy she was sunny side up and wouldn't come out any other way.

I never heard of the Vaccuum, but yes the Forceps do scare me. A friend of mine had a baby who got scarred pretty bad across his face from Forceps. I'm just praying that such things don't become a necessity.

My DD was a vacuum delivery- and she's perfectly fine. It's much quicker than having to race to the OR for a c-section.

Re: WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
DH's best friend's daughter was in distress and they tried using a vacuum first and it didn't work so they had to do an emergency csection. Their daughter is perfectly fine -- she just looked a little funny immediately after birth (head was misshapen).
I haven't thought much about this but I'll talk to my doctor and find out at labor & delivery class what is done at our hospital and see what they suggest. I really believe they are the experts, though, and would only resort to doing something risky if the risk outweighed the problem.

DD was born with Forceps and she is perfectly healthy...Honestly, she didn't even have a too much of a cone head. I think the doc used it more just to open me up

Re: WWYD - Delivery... Forceps, Vaccuum, C-Section
I think it is very, very, rare that they use forceps anymore. And if they do, the benefits outweigh the risks- lack of oxygen to a baby would probably be far more risky to their development.
