WWYD - medication/sleep related
DS has silent reflux. We went through formula changes, Zantac, Pepcid etc nothing was working. We saw a gastro specialist and she put him on Pevacid. He's like a new, well almost. He can eat and his reflux is pretty much non-existent HOWEVER he can't sleep since taking it. I thought I was going crazy since he was sleeping decent before but now it's almost non-existent. I'm talking 2 - 3 hours tops throughout the day and another 3 - 4 hours at night. So 5 - 7 hours total in 24 hours. That's it. Not healthy or normal for a 6 week old.
It turns out its a side effect of the medication. The GI specialist had no alternative for me. Has this happened to anyone else. IT's like he has to be sick or not sleep. How do I choose?

So he's wired out on the medication & there isn't any other alternative?!!! It would have been nice if they would have told you that side effect
That's a h e l l of a dilema.......if it were me, I would have to go eith DS not being sick anymore............the no sleeping is not good, but the reflux has got to be much worse.
Good luck

I have to say I pretty much agree with this. What a horrible situation, first of all. Can you get a second opinion about other types of medicine that may solve both problems? I'm guessing it's not that easy of a solution, but worth a shot.
I'd say having the reflux gone is better, definitely. Imagine what that does to his poor insides, you know? And hopefully after a while of little or no sleep his body will become exhausted and he will finally sleep. Just maybe? I know it's impossible to think of that little sleep for all of you, I don't envy you one bit

Can you believe it? Not for newborns - for children there are alternatives. It was my PED who told me. I brought my DD in for a check up and he asked how my DS was doing on the pevacid. I said great, except now he has a new love for life and is always awake. He told me that it's pretty common to call the GI specialist for advice. Her advise was to cut the pill in half and give 1/2 during the day and 1/2 at night. No way am I hyping him up right before bed (it's worse right after the pill - at least I get 4 hours at night.) He's literally zoned out on the couch right now. Eyes wide open but looks like he's sleeping. FREAKY.
I'm thinking of trying just 1/2 the dose and see if his reflux stays fixed and maybe give him a little more sleep.

right now it's one pill once a day. I've been giving it in the morning and literally get no naps during hte day (just a bunch of 10 - 15 minute cat naps.) At least at night I get a few consecutive hours since most of it has run through his system.
The dr suggested cutting the pill in half and giving 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm. But I'm petrified that's going to take away the little bit of sleep I get at night.

well i think i would just try it. What is the worst that could happen, DC starts getting the reflux, so you can go right back. IMO it is worth a shot. I would die if DC only napped 15 min at a time. Nap time is mommy time LOL.
If you see it effect night time or any relfux, then go back to norm. But IMO it can't hurt. You have been through the worst already
GOOD LUCK

I have been reading your posts since you had your DS. I feel so bad for you and your DS. I hope he feels better soon and I hope you can get some rest. Sleep deprivation is the worst.

DD was on Prevacid as an infant but we had no problems with her sleeping. SHe didn't take a pill though - the pharmacy mixed a suspension (liquid) for her - maybe that makes a difference - I gave it to her in a syringe in her month.

Is the medication your only solution?
Did you try putting cereal in his bottles?
