My DD isnt this age yet - but my mom told us that when we tried this she would just bring us back to our room. She NEVER let us in the bed (even during a thunderstorm ), not even once so we never thought it would happen

Ditto. I or DH just walk her back to her bed, put her down and sit with her a minute or two. We don't allow her in our bed in the middle of the night.

Just bring her back to bed. The first few times she may fight it but if you don't use this technique it will become a habit for her and you'll have her in your bed every ight.

I saw an episode of the Supernanny where this was the problem.
Basically each and every time, you take them by the hand and walk them back into their room and in their bed. The first 2 times you tell them its bedtime and that you love them and you'll see them in the morning. After that, each time you do not say a word to them.
It's going to take a few nights and they'll probably be kicking/screaming, etc. But just keep doing it.

How long has it been going on for? That might make a difference in how easy it is to stop as well. Can you gate his room so he cannot get out?

I was going to suggest a gate also.

Re: WWYD - my 3 year old wakes up every night and come into our room..
My three year old does the same thing..I don't believe a gate or locking them in their room will help, he'll just cry and wake up even more out of his sleepy state..
I walk her back to her room saying nothing but it's okay, it's okay, shhhh, go back to sleep...and she usually just needs a hug and goes back to sleep.
ETA: he needs the big boy speech at night to go to bed. something like this...your a big boy right? well big boys stay in their bed...and if he gets whiney/cries change subject..so what do you want for breakfast in the morning.. We use the "you dont' have to go to sleep right now, but you have to stay in your bed"
