WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
I just got nominated to go on my company's leadership Outward Bound trip. They only select about 10 people per year to go on it so it is a pretty big deal. The problem is that it is an overnight trip (about a 2 hour drive so not too far) that is on July 30th and 31st. That may be only 3 weeks after giving birth. I'm wondering if I would be okay to do this both mentally and physically at that point. What do you guys thinks?
They asked for an answer ASAP on if I will be attending.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
Mentally and physically, I was NO WHERE near ready to be away from DD overnight.
The first time we left her for an extended period of time (6 hours....) she was 9 weeks old and I had a full on panic attack.
Everyone is different, but as a BTDT 3 weeks was much to soon for me.
ETA: You could also still have some pretty heavy bleeding at 3 weeks PP as well.

I'm different. At 3 weeks, while I would be sad, I would go.

Very good point, I didn't even think of this. It's also a pretty physical type of trip, with lots of team challenges and high wire stuff.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
Physically, you will probably fine to go. Mentally- everyone is different. I chose not to go to my Best friend's Bachlorette Party this past weekend (dd is 7 weeks old). It was only 1 & 1/2 hours away, but I just couldn't leave DD. She is not sleeping through the night, so I felt bad asking someone to watch her, and I just knew I'd be worried and thinking about her too much to enjoy myself.
however, yours is work related..so obviously it's different that my trip which was for fun. Do you think it will affect the way you are perceived at your job if you don't go?

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
I agree with the PP....everyone is different, but after 3 weeks, not only was I not ready to leave DD, BUT I was still pretty soar from my c-section. I couldn't have imagined traveling in a car for 2 hours.
The first time I left DD, she was 5 weeks old and we had to go to a wedding for a few hours in the afternoon. I think I called every hour to check on her.

Keep in mind too, if you end up with a c-section, 3 weeks PP is too soon for heavy physical activity. I didn't have a c/s, but I would assume the incision is far from healed at that point to.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
What if you are late and it is only 2 weeks after the little one is born. Could you dh go with you and the baby that way you can see the baby in the evening and at night.
I wouldn't be comfortable leaving my little one that soon after giving birth.

Ditto.
I will add though that every pregnancy is different. Some women bounce back quicker than others..some have complications while others no..
yes, you'll be bleeding but at 3 weeks PP (I know that at least for me) it was more like a menstrual period bleeding and not full on...

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
I am due 7/8 and I have my future sister in laws bachelorette party the same weekend that you are talking about. It is over night and I am going. I was suppose to go for the entire weekend but only signed up for one over night. I will be leaving DC with DH and know he will take wonderful care of him/her. Who will you be leaving the baby with?

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
Physically- 3 weeks pp I was still laying on my stomach any chance I could so DH could stick ice on the grape sized hemorrhoid that my son gave me on the way to his birthday party. I could barely drive let alone walk on some type of wire.
Emotionally- 3 weeks pp I stopped being so loopy from the hormones so I think I could have done a night away if it was for something uber important- like a funeral. At 8 weeks ds stayed at my mil's up the block overnight (about 12 hours) b/c it was my 30th bday and we wanted to drink a little and dtd- and even then it was hard, lol.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
Are you planning on FFing or BFing? If you're BFing, there's no way I'd leave a 3 week old. If you end up with a c-section, you may not feel physically up for a trip. There's also the emotional aspect of leaving your 2-3 week old. I personally couldn't do it.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
I would never be able to leave my baby that soon after giving birth. I took a 2 night trip to Vegas with some friends when DD was 9 months, and I missed her so much, I ended up flying home a day early.

Honestly, I think this will be too much for you--especially if you end up needing a c-section--which noone knows until they give birth.

Your doctor will not clear you to go on an Outward Bound trip at 3 weeks pp. No way.

I agree. I had a fairly easy recovery from my v-birth and my doctor is pretty laid back and there's no way she would have approved that.

Re: WWYD - Overnight trip after 3 weeks
Thank you all so much for the advice.
I declined the offer this morning and asked them to keep me in mind the next time that the trip ran. I'm going to talk to my boss about it too, just so he knows that I really wanted to go and that it was out of my control.
