WWYD - Work & TTC for #2

So, we just got horrible news at work yesterday.

I work in finance, and the company announced that it was on the verge of going under.

They will be laying off up to 50% of staff next week and then we will see how it goes for the rest of the year and first quarter.

There is a distinct chance that the company will not survive the middle of next year if the markets don't get better.

DH and I had originally planned on ttc for # 2 fall of next year. I am 34 so we really can't wait much longer.

Would you stick to the original plan?

I was even thinking of moving up the timeline and ttc now. We have enough in savings to get us through 2 years on DH's income only.

My thought being, if we ttc now and are blessed enough to be able to get PG soon, if I get laid off, I can just start looking after I have # 2.

Is this crazy? (Not that I've spoken to DH about this plan or that he would ever agree.

I just don't want to start a new job and not be able to get maternity leave.

You have savings for 2 years..... sounds like the perfect opportunity if you do get laid off... sometimes things happen for a reason!

I am not a parent yet, but based on my own life experiences so far, I say do not put off ttc. Money and work issues/difficulties,etc may/will always exist, the opportunity to have another child may not always exist. I say go for it as you had planned, since you feel you are running short on time to ttc. It will all work out, it always does. JMO

ITA! Regardless of #2, you'll be able to spend time with #1 and be ok financially. I think whatever you decide about TTC, you're in a great position.

And who knows - you could be the other 50%!

I agree with the PP. I am in a similar dilemma myself.

I say if you really know you want to have another child- go for it! There is never a "right" time financially- especially these days. You can try banking as much $$ as you can now- so if something happens- you will have even more savings.

And you will get through this- and things will hopefully get better in the economy-

Oh Holly that stinks about your job!!! But I agree with the previous posters - if you have enough savings where you can get by on 1 salary for a few years don't hold off. There really is never a "right" time when it comes to finances and planning for a baby. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon to you!!!! And Frankie would make A WONDERFUL BIG BROTHER!!! I would stick with your plan, if not start sooner. You never know what time will bring but you're in a great place if you have 2 years savings - good for you guys Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
