WWYD
I need help deciding what to do about a job! Please tell me what you would do.
Currently I am a TA and I also work after school in a position that is a hard job to fill for my district. I'm never going to get an actual teaching job here b/c the way things are going with everybody getting excessed... I work about 80 hours a week, some weeks I don't get home until 9 or 10 at night. Summers I only work three hours a day. I make decent money and my children can often come to work with me after school. It's a very family oriented district and they treat me very well, especially because they want me to stay to fulfill my after school responsibilities.
I was given the opportunity to work in the city at a private school. I would leave for work at 5:30 every day and be able to be home by 4:45. I will be taking a pay cut of about $20,000, but I will be teaching my own class.
I'm just not sure what to do... I would love to work in the city and have an actual teaching job and actually start my career. On the other hand, the commute will be rough for me and losing $$ will be tough, especially since money is already tight... I know there will not be a lot of chance to advance there also. So WWYD? Stay as a TA or a sub and hope there is a job eventually on the island or go to the city, but take a big pay cut and have a "normal" work schedule? Thanks!!!

Re: WWYD
I'm not really sure what I would do - but 20K is a lot of money.... however, your hours are not wonderful, but I can tell you the commute blows.
I commute from Merrick to Flushing... on a rainy day - it can take 1.5/2 hours. Not fun...
I'd decide on the negatives/positives of each and go from there.

What is your cert. in? If you are willing to work for the DOE I think you would be able to find a job. They are always hiring special education positions and you never know when they have a one off general ed position opening.

Re: WWYD
I don't think I'd take a 20K pay cut and a miserable commute, even if my hours were shorter. IMO it's going to get old fast.

Not necessarily. Some areas of the city are harder to get jobs in than on LI. SpEd is one of the few high need positions, but going from SpEd to a gen ed position means that you lose your seniority and (I think) need to go through another probationary period before you're tenured again.

This was my thinking... I felt the same way. I think given the ages of my kids and the salary, I'm better off staying on LI, even if it's just subbing for now...
Thank you for everyone's thoughts!!

Re: WWYD
I have a similar commute. I get on a 5:55 train (fortunately I live 3 miles from the station) to arrive by 7:30 and I get home again around 5:15.
It's a long day. It's taken a toll because I am always worn out. I wouldn't recommend it, especially with a pay cut involved.

I do a very similar commute, Wantagh to the south Bronx. Its about an hour each way, more if I take the train. It does wear on you. I would keep looking for a DOE job. If you are willing to work in District 75, you should not have a problem getting a job. When I was looking for a job last year, I interviewed at 6 schools and was offered 2 positions, and the climate it a little better this year.

Re: WWYD
i think i would stay where I am. although you work longer hours, you are making more money. also, and i think this is an important thing to consider, you are getting time into theretirement system - you would not get that with a private school. also, i guess you never know what would open up for you in that district since they like you so much. i would stay and look elsewhere like the DOE or other LI districts if possible. it's so tough out there right now with all the excessing! GOOD LUCK!

Re: WWYD
I would keep the position you have now with the better commute and more money. Depending on where you live it is possible to hold out for a position closer to you but in the DOE?
