I have been with my company for just over 3 1/2 years. I have held two different positions at this company in completely different areas. My current job I have been in for just over a year but I see/hear its a dead end. A job was just posted for a position I have been really interested in for a while in my old area. I have a pretty good relationship with the hiring manager (as in the past he said they would be more than happy to take me back). I am not sure I have all the qualifications that are needed but it's definitely something I would be interested in. Do you think it would be dumb to apply?

I don't want to piss off my current managers however, I feel like I am being held back from learning new things and I know I will never move up within the dept. This new position I feel would be great learning opportunity in the field but not necessarily what I went to school for.

Can you talk to the hiring manger for the new job, "off the record" to see what he says - not that he would say, "oh if you apply, it'll be yours," but to get some kind of feed back as to your qualifications. If you can't do that, then I think I would go ahead and apply anyway.

Thanks ive come to the same conclusion that im just going to apply. Even if i dont get an interview it may just open up managements eyes that i am not happy with my current situation. There was a discussion yesterday btwn supervisors that i overheard and basically one of them is holding me back from learning new areas since it benefits her
