I guess I didnt know how harmless it could be to dunk a 1 year old...

I hope I didnt make it worse for DD.. as for MIL... there is not much I can do to make it better... it is what it is.... I already apologized... oh well..

Thanks girls... this was good to get out and to know...

Wait...YOU apologized? I don't think that you did anything wrong! You were in fear for your child's safety.

I definitely think that she crossed the line. I also want to add that I am a big swimmer have always loved swimming and want my girls to also. To this day, I have not dunked my 3 1/2 y.o. or 18 month old and I wouldn't.

I hope MIL apologized to you as well!

I apologized because I didnt want her to feel any worse than she already did because of me.... she already felt bad for not knowing how it would shock my DD... and for making her cry... so I wanted to make it better.... if that makes sense..

I don't think so- my SIL was teasing me about doing this to DD and she told me I was giving her the look of death. There is NO way that is acceptable!

I would've been pisssssed!!!!! While i'm all for my son to learn to get use to the water, I'd like an INSTRUCTOR to do these things. Don't they blow in their face before dunking so they don't swallow water? I would've freaked out too b/c suppose your MIL didn't know this... and your DD did swallow a ton of water.

Not her place to do this for the first time (it's one thing if she's been taught this before, etc.). She actually could've scared your DD more but at the same time screaming no might of scared your dd too. . .so bottom line this wouldn't have happened if your MIL didn't take it upon herself to teach her how to swim!

I dont see the issue with it.

My MIL would never do that, but I do it all the time. I have done it with my nieces and nephews without asking when they were younger.

Honestly I think your reaction was probably not the best for your DC simply because DC was upset and now by your reaction DC might start to associate that as a BAD thing.

DS hates when I dunk him but its part of learning to swim IMO and I will continue to do it because I feel its important for him to be comfortable in the water.

I should add that my reaction might have alot to do with the fact that I taught swim lessons for many years.

While I agree that babies need to learn to swim, go under water, etc, there are different ways to go about learning that, and that choice is up to the parents. I think MIL crossed a line by taking action that can scare DC and also instill a fear of water. Ive been slowly teaching DD by getting her to blow bubbles and get closer and closer to going under with me watching her on her own. If someone now came along and dunked her completely under, scaring her and upsetting her, not only would I be mad because they needlessly upset her, but they could have now made her scared to start putting her face in slowly.

I agree. While I understand dunking the baby (my son went under water young) I think it is totally crossing the line to dunk any child that is not yours without permission. Its totally wrong!

Huh? Wow? I would be ******!! How dare anyone dunk my child's head under the water!

How would she like it if someone dunked her head under the water!
