WWYD Re: Nursery School

My son goes to 5 day full day nursery school.

Half of his class is there every day. The other is half is MWF or TH.

I am noticing that he is coming home with duplicate projects every week.

It makes me think that she is doing a project with the Monday kids and then again on Tuesday. KWIM?

I want to say something but I don't want to single out Aiden or make it ackward since there is still a whole school year ahead.

WWYD?

I just feel if I am paying good money for this program - that she can at least give him a different project every day.

The same thing happens at our nursery school. All the kids in DS's class go 5 days, but most go half day. In the afternoon the few full day kids are repeating exactly what happened in the morning.

I'd ask if they could have an enrichment project for your DS to do while the other kids are doing work he's already done, so that the concept is being repeated but not the exact work.

Exactly. At least I know I am not a crazy loon! lol

What gets me is there are 2 different nursery school classes run the same way. Why wouldn't they just put the full-timers in one class so the teacher can do things with them every day.

Re: WWYD Re: Nursery School

I would definitely say something. Bella's pre-school/daycare had set days and times that they did stuff. Bella didn't go on Thursdays, so she missed computer class...but if she wanted, she could go with the other class on their designated computer class days.

That would really annoy me. It's almost seems that you are paying him to go full time but really only getting part time amount of work if that makes sense. I would also think that he may get bored because he already did the stuff.

Last year I spoke to the director of the school my kids attend about DS being able to go either full days or 5 half days and her answer was that he would be basically be doing to the same things except in different order. I kept him in the part time program.

I would not be annoyed...repetition is actually really good for kids this age.

But its not educational repetition. If he was learning to write his letters and he did the same thing Monday and Tuesday it would be different.

But the painting/picture/craft he is doing Monday - he is doing Tuesday.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any real curriculum with learning anything with their letters.

I am quite disappointed in the Nursery School program. My DD attends the preschool program there and I think its wonderful with what she is learning/doing.

Oh yeah...totally say something. Thats BS... Why cant they come up with more creativity regardless of days. Every day can be different. It doesnt have to duplicate at all.

this would absolutely bother me and I definately think you should talk to the director/teachers about it.

It sounds educational to me. He is in Nursery school so its not developmentally appropriate for him to learn to write his letters. However having him work on fine motor skills such as painting, bead work, cutting, folding and tearing is. Check out the NYSED.gov preschool planning page to get an idea what is appropriate at this age. Keep in mind that Nursery school is not even pre-k.

What would bother me is if they are lacking in creativity and not fostering self learning activities.
