WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
Abby is about to turn one. She is still pretty petite at about 19 pounds give or take an ounce as per the bathroom scale. I think she is too small for us to turn the seat around. Is there a weight vs. age discrepancy to consider? Anyone with a similar experience, please share. TIA!.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
DD was under 20 pounds at her 12 month visit too. Maybe 18.5 or 19 pounds.
Her ped told us we cannot turn her seat around. It's not one or the other, she had to be 20 pounds and a year old.
We waited a few weeks and then turned it around then.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
If she's fine facing backwards, then let her be if you want. You don't have to put her forward. But it is 1 year AND 20 lbs otherwise.
I turned jacen around before he hit the 20 lb mark because he was always miserable in the car and car seat.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
You know EJ is on the bigger side. So at 12 month we thought we would turn the seat around. But the carseat guy told us to wait until he was 15 months. The longer you wait the better it is. It is still safer for them to be rear facing.
I think my carseat had a limit of 30Lbs for rear facing.
ETA: The 1 year and 20 Lbs is MINIMUM requirement.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
Luca is over 20 lbs and he'll be a year on 9/5 but we plan on having him rear-facing for as long as possible. as long as he isn't complaining (and he loves his car seat!) i don't see a need for it. it's just safer to be rear facing and i think you should go with your gut. even if she was a year and just 20 lbs., i think you'd feel safer with her rear facing, and i agree with your mommy instincts.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
If she is happy rear facing, and you feel she isn't ready to be turned, it wouldn't hurt to keep her like that for a few more months.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
DD is one and exactly 20 lbs..we didn't turn in my car (4 door), her feet don't come close to touching the seat and they say it is safer to be rear facing for as long as you can..
In my DH's car, he has a 2 door. The carseat wouldn't fit rear facing and if it did he would have to climb in the backseat to strap her in. We decided to do front facing in his car. She is in my car more anyway.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
Neither of my kids were 20lbs at a year. I didn't turn them. Ella was 18/19 months when we flipped her. Erik (at 15mths) is still rear facing.
The guideline is at LEAST 1 year AND at LEAST 20lbs. She should remain rear facing.
Recent studies show you should leave them rear facing as long as possible.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
Most car seats allow you to keep the car seat rear facing until 30 pounds or so. Like someone said 20 pounds is the minimum to turn the seat around. They recommend keeping it rear facing as long as possible. There are recommendations out there that say you should keep it rear facing until close to 2 years old. We did not turn my DS's seat around until he was about 19 months. I would keep it rear facing.

Re: WWYD Re: turning the car seat around
ds was 20 lbs at 3 1/2 months... when we asked the ped about the seat issue they told us it was a matter of both size and age... and that the longer you keep them reversed the better

I am planning on keeping them rear facing until they are two, as per the new recommendations.

We have the same issue. DS will be one in a couple of weeks and he is only 16 1/2 pounds. We will leave him rear facing for a while, but at this rate, he's going to be sitting that way for his 2nd birthday.
