WWYD? Tonsillectomy and question for BTDT moms.

DS is 3 and we were told to keep him out of school for one week after the surgery and 'physical activites' for 2-3 weeks. I asked if that even meant recess. Doctor said no recess. I have no problem with that, but I am concerned about him going back to school and seeing the other kids going to the playground. His teacher said that one teacher will stay in the classroom with him and do other activites. But his classroom actually overlooks the playground.

Should I just keep him out for 2 weeks? (Which seems stupid) Should I beg them to take him somewhere else in the school, other than the classroom?

If your child had a tonsillectomy, how was their recovery?

TIA!

Damien had his tonsils and adenoids out when he was 3. We kept him home from school for a week and when he went back we let him play outside we just made sure they knew not to let him go crazy and to take it easy. After the first day home from the hospital he was back to his regular self and we never even used any of the pain meds they gave us. It was a super quick and easy recoveryChat Icon

When I worked in a nursery school, we had a student with asthma who couldn't always play outside. I would stay in the classroom with him on days he couldn't play outside. He was 3. I would do other things with him that we didn't usually do in the group setting. He really had no problems with it. As long as the teacher who stays with him keeps him busy, I think he will be fine...HTH a little bit...

Re: WWYD? Tonsillectomy and question for BTDT moms.

my son had his tonsils out when he was 2 1/2...he wasnt in school at the time, but his recovery was rough. I would say it took a good 2 weeks for him to feel better.

My baby is having his tonsils out at 24 months. He does go to school, and I am not going to send him for 2 weeks. This is just because I know how long it took for his brother to recover. I guess the exception would be if he is doing wonderful, then I would send him...

my DD was out for a week, took it easy when she went back to school. But she didn't feel pain at all. No pain meds, and eating reg foods fairly quickly.

I know he can be distracted, but I am just not sure putting him in the classroom that overlooks the playground is a good idea. Did that boy look out the window and see his classmates?

I guess I will just take it and see how it goes. I will talk more with his teachers to see if they think it's smart to have him in the classroom and looking out and seeing his friends playing.

Yes...the class room overlooked the playground. Maybe they can keep the blinds closed...He may complain at first, but I think he will be fine with the idea. Take it day by day...Good luck

Re: WWYD? Tonsillectomy and question for BTDT moms.

Does your DS get strep or just tosillitis? TJ got just tonsilitis, never strep, so they were able to do a newer procedure where they shave the tonsils as opposed to removing them completely. The recovery was rough, but he was back on his feet and able to resume normal activity after 7 days as opposed to the "old school" surgery where it is 2-3 weeks.

He has never had strep or tonsillitis. Isn't that strange? Chat Icon

His tonsils are so large that they actually touch, even when he isn't sick. He inherited my 'pork chops'. (That's what DH used to call my tonsils before they removed mine.) He has sleep apnea and doctors wanted to wait til he turned 3 to remove them, unless his apnea was severe. SInce it wasn't 'severe', they waited. But now the doctor believes they may have waited too long because he says his apnea appears to be causing behavioral problems. Seems you can't win. Chat Icon

TJ's tonsils were enormous as well. When he got tonsillitis they would swell and I would have to give him a steroid so he didnt choke on them.

I would ask them about the tonsil shaving. They leave only about 5% of the tonsil (they dont remove the entire tissue/gland) so there is no bleeding after the surgery and the recovery is supposed to be easier but honestly it was still rough. I couldnt imagine if they did the total gland removal Chat Icon They call the tonsil shaving a partial tonsillectomy.
