BTDT girls and working moms wwyd

So I am having my 2nd DD due Sept 24. I have a DD that is currently 21 months. I am not planning on returning to work but a lot of people advised me not to tell my boss so I havent. I basically told him that it is up in the air depending on how everything goes and if my mom, who watches my DD now, can handle the two etc. So I told him my last day would be Sept 17. Which is really dumb on my part, because that gives me a week to really relax before my due date, with the thought that I will go on time or late. I really have been thinking it over and want to take more time off before the baby one, to get things done that I have not, won't be able to by then, being huge and uncomfy, and two to spend some quality mommy and baby time with my little girl. So my question is would you ask to take leave earlier, and then tell him ive been thinking and dont think i am goign to come back thinking about how tough it was with one, now having a toddler and newborn, not thinking my mom can handle it, breastfeeding, etc. or just tell him i am taking my leave earlier, and then wait until baby is born to tell him. Or just keep it where it is and tell him when I am on leave, or tell him before either way.

Re: BTDT girls and working moms wwyd

me personally, if I wasnt planning on coming back, I would tell my job

I just feel like you may want to go back to work at some point, and they will appreciate that you were upfront with them and likely open the door for you- either way you may need a recommendation so I just think it would be better

good luck

I am not sure about extending your leave, since I have not been in that situation (I work for a school system, so my time ended when school ended).
But, I did take a year leave, even though I know I most likely won't be coming back. I wanted to have the option, just in case not having my salary is harder on us than we think.
I have said pretty much the same thing as you...I am not sure my MIL will be able to handle two infants everyday, so we'll see how it goes.
I think you just need to make sure you give them enough time, if you definitely decide you aren't coming back.

Well If i do go back to work, it will be for the school system. I am a certified teacher with my Masters, and only took this law office job because there were no jobs at the time. I really want to get out of the office setting and back into schools. So if I do need a job, it wont be coming back here. My DH and I also have a photo and dj business so I have that to fall back on as well.

I'd be upfront.
Say you want to start your leave a little earlier & you wont be returning.

This gives them an opportunity to find someone to replace you. Instead of waiting 6 weeks to find out what you are doing & them having to scramble.

You are legally entitled to 6 weeks.

That's just me though.

I have a replacement already tentatively for 10 weeks (as they think I will be returning) and I made sure that it was someone that would be able to take over if I dont come back so we left it open.

I'm NOT going back, but my job doesn't know that. I pay into my benefits all year long, so I'm going to take advantage of them.

I also have a young toddler at home (17 months) she will be 18 months when this baby is born in 3.5 weeks.

I would ask to start your leave a little earlier if you are nervous about the timing.

This is my last week in the office. I'm going to be working from home next week and then will be using 2 weeks of my PTO time before the baby is born (provided of course he doesn't come early). I need to get stuff done in the house before this kid arrives.

Are you afraid that if you tell him now that your not coming back that he will lay you off now?
If so then maybe wait to tell him in Sept. and just say you did a lot of thinking and this was the decision you made.

it sounds like you have it covered then, I would just let them know that you will be going out sooner than anticipated

No I would love to have him lay me off now LOL I am so ready to be done! But I know it wont happen. He relies on me too much, and I dont think my replacement can start this early.
