WWYD? (Update at bottom)
So recently I was given a promotion at work. Just after I found out, I was called for an interview at another agency for an even better position. DH didn't think I should go on the interview because I was already given a promotion at work, but I went, and I got the call Friday that I got the job!
But now I'm in the same conundrum that DH said I'd be in, lol. I have two amazing offers in front of me and don't know which to take:
1st offer: Current agency Multi-dimensional family therapy case manager (i.e. case work with substance abuse clients) Small increase in salary Free alcohol and substance abuse counselor license training (worth $6K) Same easy commute Still lots of field work Less growth opportunity - but the license eventually will give me higher credentials and the ability to do substance abuse counseling Already been at this agency for 2 years and am very comfortable
2nd offer: Different agency Therapeutic Foster Care Supervisor position (essentially my current boss' job) Significant increase in salary More office based - less field work No license training (that I know of) Longer commute Paid parking More vacation days 3-month probation and the awkwardness of starting at a new job
WWYD???????

Re: WWYD?
hmm that is a very tough decision. Neither one jumps out at me immediately as being the "better" choice.
But a few things maybe to think of:
how much do you enjoy the field work aspect of the job? do you think you'd miss it if you switch to a more supervisory role?
which job is more secure long-term?
how important is the license training in your field?
overall quality of life-- which will be less stressful and/or make you more content/fulfilled?
how much longer is the commute? how much more vacation do you get? how big is the pay difference?..... not saying that you should look at the "perks" alone to make your decision.... but balance them out to figure out which will give you a better life overall.
Good luck.. I know how hard it can be to make these decisions!!!!

I agree with this poster, condsider the longer commute vs the vacation days vs the pay increase. I think if the commute is an hour/day it may not be worth it. Unless the vacation and salary significant is pretty high.

Re: WWYD?
Thanks for your response.
how much do you enjoy the field work aspect of the job? do you think you'd miss it if you switch to a more supervisory role? --I enjoy field work, but I'm definitely getting tired of the constant on the go mentality
which job is more secure long-term? --Job 1 is grant funded, job 2 is not. So probably job 2
how important is the license training in your field? --Pretty important, I'm a social worker.
overall quality of life-- which will be less stressful and/or make you more content/fulfilled? --I have know idea, lol
how much longer is the commute? how much more vacation do you get? how big is the pay difference? --20 minute difference in commute, so not that bad --4 more vacation days --about a $10-15K salary difference

Re: WWYD?
What a difficult choice!
Having being burnt with change in the past, especially for following after a higher paying job, and then ending up at a place that was a mess in every sense of the word, I would probably stay put for now. Especially because you are going to get the substance abuse training at your current job.
That is so important nowadays.
Also if you went on this interview and were offered the position right away, you will probably be able to find the same or similar opportunity down the road.
Also IMO being a supervisor can be really challenging, especially in a NEW environment. It would probably be a lot easier to adapt to this kind of change in someplace you are already working at and know the people under you and the dynamics of the company.
Let us know what you decide.
ETA: Another thing I thought of: Which do you think will be the more family friendly/better quality of life choice?
In my experience field based positions are best for this, especially because of the flexibility and independence of the position.
In office based positions it seems you have to be "on" more, they aren't as flexible and can turn into you having to be there for hours and hours (especially in a supervisory role). Maybe this is not the case with the new place though but just wanted to throw that out there based on some of my experiences in the past.

Re: WWYD?
Update:
So I accepted job #2 and gave my notice to my agency on Tuesday..........then yesterday I get a phone call from the secretary at the new agency with a salary quote and here's the conv:
Me: that's significantly lower than what I was told during my interview. (Like this is around 7-9K lower.)
Her: yes but it seems you only have 2 years experience and no supervisory experience, so we can only offer you a CASE COORDINATOR position, not the program supervisor.
Me: "ummm is there a reason no one told me this when I was there last week? I interviewed for program supervisor, and i was called on friday and told I was given the program supervisor position......why is it changing now????"
Her: "oh and i see here your master's is an MA not an MSW"
Me: Right, but again, I wish someone would've said something last week when I was there. Could you tell me the difference between the program supervisor and the case coordinator?
Her: you mean in salary?
Me: no, in job function. I want to make sure I'm not making a lateral move.
Her: well I don't want to say anything because I'm not really sure. But I'm sure if you take the job as case coordinator and you gain some experience, maybe one day you can become the program supervisor. Would you like to leave a message for the director?
Me: That would be great....thank you
Ummmmmmmmmmm CAN THEY DO THAT?????????????? Figures I already gave my notice and now they're telling me this???????????? *****??????

Re: WWYD? (Update at bottom)
Holy crap! I wouldn't have given notice until I got the offer letter.
Sorry this happened.
You may have to crawl back to your other job.

Yikes!
Morale of the story... never give notice until you have the job offer in writing (that details EVERYTHING - salary, title, job description, benefits, etc.)

Re: WWYD? (Update at bottom)
They can do that. I would call or email to discuss the situation with the person you interviewed or with your headhunter. As backup - discuss possibly staying at the old job with your boss.

It does help to have everything in writing for clarification purposes but it's not a binding agreement. They can reneg on an offer at at any time.

Re: WWYD? (Update at bottom)
After talking with someone yesterday, I have no idea who (not the director), I was told that even though the director wanted me for the position, HR reviewed my resume and determined I wasn't qualified so they're offering me this new position which they don't even have a job description for
I spoke to the director of the other program in my agency with the position I was supposed to take (offer #1 from original post).......she's going to speak to her boss and see if she can give me that position back again.
If not, I can stay in my current position.
But this new agency can go shove it for all I care at this point. They obviously don't know how to do business.

Re: WWYD? (Update at bottom)
They sound like idiots. Especially since everything is going through "HR" so much. (No offense to you HR people).
I am glad that it has worked out though and you can stay put at your current agency.
My agency is actually hiring right now. I know my supervisor is looking for someone with either a MSW or an equivalent (he wants someone with experience in general). If things do not work out for whatever reason, send me an FM and I can try to help you out.

Oh I definitely know written offers aren't binding either.
But at least if you have it in writing, it's more "official" and less chance something similar to OP's situation happen.
