WWYD? When would you take a baby on a plane?

My mother had her hip replaced this past Monday. Her DH called me last night and asked if I would consider flying out to surprise her with the baby and dd. Apparently, she is very depressed over not being able to meet my son and won't be able to visit for 6 months. He's only 3 weeks old and I really don't know when it would be okay to bring him on a plane. The flight is about 6 hours. WWYD?

i brought ds on the plane when he was just 5 weeks. he did fine. as a matter of fact, it's easier when they're younger because they basically sleep the whole time. i would check with your ped first to make sure it's okay, and also check with the airline to see if they need a note for such a young infant (my airline did; the ped wrote a note saying "jonah is a healthy baby boy who is able to fly on an airplane" Chat Icon )

We brought dd on a plane at 10 weeks. I'd be a bit nervous if it was before the 8 week mark. My ped. scared the heck out of us with telling us that if they get a fever before 8 weeks they have to go to the hospital for a spinal tap. That's just me though!

I took DS on a plane to NY when he was 3 weeks old. We had no choice since we had to find a place to live here. He was fine on the plane, but when we got back, he got REALLY sick, and they almost did a spinal tap on him. It was pretty scary. I wouldn't chance it with a baby that young to be honest.

I think 'd wait till about 6-8 weeks, then do it. JMO, and I'm not germaphobe at all. My thoughts are that the baby will be a little more adjusted and you will be feeling up to traveling. You need to time to heal before traveling.

Smae here - I didn't even really take DS to a shopping mall before his first round of shots.

I lived out of state for 10 years and flew frequently and I think I got sick almost every time I flew (sometimes just a cold) and I rarely get sick otherwise. I just think all the bad germs re-circulate through the plane during the flight.

I would wait until after the first shots too.

On the bright side, a few more weeks will give your mother more time to recover and to be able to enjoy your DC a little more when they are there.
