I dont think its a lost cause. My mother has cast iron cookware and Im pretty sure you can scour off the rust and reseason it so you're on the right track. It involves coating it with oil and "baking" it in the oven. But....if you dont know how it do it, you might be better off letting your DH do it. You could make a bad situation worse. I dont know if you can season incorrectly or not but if you can do it incorrectly and mess it up, its going to be more work when you fess up. Your heart was in the right place to try to get it cleaned to begin with. Thats got to be worth something

I guess I'll have to fess up. I can always knock him unconscious with it if necessary.
Thanks for your help. He's probably better off seasoning it. I'm definitely not the one to cook even an empty pan.
