If you truly love the place I would definitely leave a deposit and hold a spot on the waiting list. I have a friend that I work with who had her daughter on a waiting list and didn't get a call until a little over a year later, with that said, I would definitely try to find a back up plan.

How long until DC goes to daycare? This is important because there's a "graduation" where once the newborns reach a certain age/milestone, they graduate to the next room.
So, say if you're 4th on the list, you need to have 4 kids graduate before you get in. If you have 4-5 months before your DC needs to go to daycare, the likelihood of him/her getting in is very good.
I called DS's daycare every week to see the progress, and lo and behold, he got in on time!
