Xpost from parenting: abnormal pap smear after giving birth?
I had a pap smear done 4 weeks after I gave birth and it came back "abnormal". It said "Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance". However, I tested negative for HPV, so the pap is considered negative. The nurse told me that this means I have inflammation, not cancer. I am going to see the doc in a week to discuss the results further, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with abnormal pap smears. Could this be related to giving birth?
TIA

Re: Xpost from parenting: abnormal pap smear after giving birth?
I had ASCUS years ago. I also tested negative for HPV so I know it had nothing to do with that. So they did a culposcopy where they took a biopsy that showed something called Squamous Metaplasia (overgrowth of cells that are trying to repair an inflammation).
Turns out I had a bacterial infection that was causing inflammation, that kept getting misdiagnosed as a yeast infection. Once treated, it went away and my ASCUS went away, had normal paps. The infection was called Bacterial vaginosis. I dont know if that is what is causing your inflammation though. ASCUS could be from anything.
I also stopped using tampons, and I think that helped prevent further inflammation. I dont use them now due to this.
I would think this could be related to trauma from giving birth but I am not sure. What did your dr say about that possibilty? If you tested negative for HPV, they should make sure you don't have a bacterial infection. Either way, in my experience, I dont think it's anything to worry about as long as it isn't HPV related. Fm if you want!

Thanks for the reply. To test you for the bacterial infection, or what they thought was a yeast infection, did they do a culture? It seems that this can be diagnosed with a culture.
I haven't seen my doc again, so i will talk to him about it next week.

The first dr who misdiagnosed me did not culture it. The second dr did but also just knew when looking at my cervix.

Wow. So you had to have a coloscopy for something that could have been diagnosed with a culture, or maybe even just by looking at it?

Well the story is a bit longer than that. I went to 4 (FOUR) drs until the last one (the 4th one) figured out what was wrong. Many drs don't give BV much thought. My cervix was irritated so badly it was just bleeding...it was a bad situation. So they did the culposcopy to be sure, but before the results came back the 4th GYN treated me with antifungals and antibacterials, b/c I had been left with it too long.
And it was just BV after all that. Yes, I had a culposcopy just for that, but as I said my cervix was in bad shape, very inflammed and irritated. They thought it was HPV related until the culopsopy showed NO HPV.
