Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
Growing up we lived across the street from an elementary school. As a kid I loved it b/c we had the park right across the street & we were never late for school & got to come home for lunch.
However, my car was hit by a schoolbus once (& he left, but you could see the paint).
The schoolbuses and cars at dismissal were really rough (but if you're at work it won't matter). IF they had chorus or a play or event same w/ the parking situation.
It would get noisy at lunch time w/ kids in the schoolyard.
At night, next to the school, they had the park & teenagers (us included, shhh!) would hang out & drink & sometimes get loud.

Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
We live 6 houses down from my DD's school. I actually love loving there ---it's super convinient to bring her to school, and I love having the school playground so close to our house because it's great to go there and let her play on the weekends.
There is a lot of cars driving by during drop-off and pick-up but they don't park on the block --- since the school itself has ample parking. Also I never noticed the traffic when I was working, because I wasnt home during those hours!

Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
For me it would depend on how close to the school (same block, I would probably opt for no), the house (my dream house or not) and the school district (my ideal district or not).
Currently our home is about a block and a half from the elementary school - but it's the back of the school so we never get any school traffic.

Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
Just from my experience in dropping off and picking my son up at preschool, I would never! I feel sooo sorry for the people on the block. The school is on a residential block and there is always cars parked everywhere and getting up and down the street can be a nightmare.

Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
You really have to see what its like at pick up and drop off times. We live close to our middle/high school campus. There are a few extra cars plarked on our block during school hours and we can hear the games. I never think of it as a negative. One of my neighbors pointed out a big positive - when the kids are in middle and high school they will be walkers and will not need rides to all their school activities.

on the flip side since you're getting mostly negative feedback, You'd have a nice playground within walking distance for your kids. and your kids will be w/in walking distance to school which is nice. And we don't live on the same street as the school but our yard backs up to school yard and I do like the sound of children playing. It's a pleasant sound.

Re: yay or nay, buying a house/living on the same block as an elementary or middle school
I grew up down the block from an elementary school. My sisters still own the house. It has some challenges during drop off/pick up. But the neighborhood is beautiful and the school is well taken care of - I used to play basketball and hang out on the playground when I was little. I would live there again in a heartbeat... I just can't afford it!
