Country living - yay or nay?

We went apple/pumpking picking yesterday to the Applewood Orchards in Warwick and had to pass through this little town called "Sugarloaf". They were having a Fall festival and it looked so nice and surprisingly enough it was pretty packed!! I swear I felt like I was REALLY in the country. Although it looked nice, I can't imagine much goes on there aside from these little events and couldn't imagine myself living there...especially in the winter.

I"m kinda glad we went again, because DH's co-worker is trying to get us to move up there closer to him...but sorry..no can do! Rockland county is as far as I would go!

Would you be able to live in a place like this?

Never. I can't be more than an hour away from a major city. I do not think that city will always be NY, but I need a more metropolitan atmosphere.

I know people who live up in that area. I wouldn't really call it "country". I would move up there. It's beautiful. And your only an hour or so from the city.

I would most definitely consider it. I need a big change from LI. I've lived her my whole life and I although I do believe it would be a major adjustment I do think I would utterly enjoy it. So peaceful, no hustle and bustle, quaint town. I think I would love it.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I grew up in the "country" and was desperate to get out of there and live in the city.

Now that I have a kid and a dog I would move back in a heartbeat.

Warwick's only 55 miles from the city, so it isn't really more than an hour.

I grew up upstate and loved it. I really like eastern Long Island too, which is really as country as Orange County where Warwick is. I would definitely move back to a more rural area. Generally everywhere has shopping, etc., and that's all I need.

What would be different about living in the country during winter as opposed to living here?

Actually we are looking to buy in that exact area..Sugarloaf, Chester. Its BEAUTIFUL there and I have been going there since I was a kid.

Its actually really convenient too because its not THAT FAR away from the city but its country living at the same time. I dont think I would be able to live as far up as the catskills or anything like that though.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I grew up in Smithtown and now live in Manhattan, so I consider Smithtown "the country". Warwick is really not much further away... just in a different direction. Unless you go into the city alot, I don't really see the difference. My DH is from Rochester and living there is the same as living on Smithtown if you do not visit the city often. We will probably move there when we are looking to buy a house.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

Totally. I moved to central CT and could not be happier. I swear there is more to do up here and want to do more because it is so much easier to get around and people are soooo nice it's infectious. I grew up on LI, worked in Manhattan for years, and thought there was no other way. I can't believe what I've been missing!!!! The cost of living is great, yet the salaries are comparable and sometimes better than the city. Many of the schools are also top-knotch. Where I live is 2 hours from Boston, 2 hours from NYC...an easy day or weekend trip to either.

I could not handle working in Manhattan anymore, and my DH is from PA so he was looking for something less than the immediate tri-state area. We love it, and really feel like we have a better quality of life.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

DH and I have lived in New Paltz and Highland now for a total of 8 years and we would never go back!!!

Anytime we visit NYC/LI yes we do miss conveninces (stores close at ungodly early hours around here) and thinsg like museums and better malls BUT we cannot stand the agressive driving and attitudes.

There is a major difference in how you are treated up here vs. down there and I know I'll get flamed but once youve lived up here you'd know what Im talking about

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I don't think I could. My DH is from upstate and whenever we go to visit his family I can't wait to get home because its so boring there. He says he can't stand going there either. And its not even that small of a town.

Re: Country living - yay or nay?

I thought we were the only ones who knew about Applewood Chat Icon

We've been going to Applewood for years, about 3 or 4 times a year (for applepicking and their Wino club activities). DH's grandparents lived in Warwick and he would spend summers there growing up.

It's definately a different life. But we couldn't do it all year long. We want to buy a summer house there after we retire.
