yellow cake vs white cake

Hi, I am baking a cake for valentine's day and am trying to decide between a yellow cake and a white cake. If I add almond extract to the cake will that make it taste better? I was thinking of making a chocolate orange frosting. Will those flavors work together?

Adding almond extract is a wonderful idea and I'd suggest a yellow cake if you're doing that. I think it's more dense.

Chocolate orange frosting might work, but how will you do it? If you made choco frosting and added some orange zest, I think that would be lovely.

Thanks, I have the almond extract and while I was in the store I purchased orange extract. I have orange zest here too.

Sounds great, just don't go overboard with the orange, because it may overpower. Try googling chocolate orange frosting and see what other recipes call for and judge from there.

Agreed! I really love the flavoring almond extract gives to cookies and cakes. I usually do half vanilla and half almond of whatever the recipe calls for.

I was going to use the America's test kitchen recipe for chocolate orange frosting. I usually like their recipes. Thanks so much for all the advice!

Aww, thanks. It came out great. We celebrated valentine's day today and had the cake. It was awesome. My husband thought it had to be a box mix because it was so good. He could not get over it. Oh - thanks for the recommendation to cut the amount of orange. It was just enough to add 1/2 tsp. to the frosting. I also used cake flour for the first time and what a huge difference it makes to baking. So nice.
