Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
We arrived back from NY yesterday. I have been sick since Wed. Josh started running a fever yesterday morning.
It was awful. Just me and josh at home. It was 6:00, I was going to wake him for more tylenol...first decided to take his temp...went down slightly, so I decided to give him a bath and see if he peps up with his new toys, clear out his nose and get him ready for bed.
I should have immediately given him the medicine when 4 hours had lapsed...instead of first taking his temp, then making sure the bath water was perfect...I think I waited too long...he isn't good with taking medicine, so I figured while he played, I would slip it in his mouth and be sure he got the full dose.
I put his legs in the tub...he starts crying..I pick him up...then it started.
It was a nightmare. Eyes rolled back, jerking, arched, naked, slippery...I couldn't dial 911 because I needed both hands to hold him.
He flung himself backwards on the couch, I called then...picked him up...phone dropped while I was talking...I gave up and ran outside with him screaming for someone to help me and call 911. no one came out...so he was still in it...I was able to pick up the phone and call again, they were already on their way
We went to ER...they said it just happened to be at that moment his fever spiked. Then EMT told me the tub caused it, but the dr said it was just that he was in the tub at the time of the spike.
I now know I am basically helpless in a crisis situation. I did not know if the EMT was going to know my apt number or not...I heard the sirens, but did not want to run out since he was naked and it was cold out. He was just staring into space and stiff...I thought he was brain dead.
On a positive note though...thank God for this site.
I learned so much...
I knew to go to a hospital with a children's ER.
I knew Nicole's Luca had a fever induced seizure, so I was able to get it together once the EMTs go there.
Thanks to Seles little Luca and greeneyes...I knew to announce to anyone who listened that the fever is not unknown, I gave it to him. I did not want drs to assume it was a UTI.
So, other then that, Easter with my family was nice. I am looking forward to going back through the week and seeing all of the baby's pics with their easter outfits on

Re: Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
Oh Janice- you poor thing.
I had a few febrile seizures as a child. To this day (34 years later) my mom and dad STILL talk about how frightening it was.
You got through it- and you did what you were supposed to do. NO ONE can possibly be calm in that type of a situation.
Just an FYI- don't be surprised if it happens again. Once a child has a febrile seizure, it's likely to be something they are more susceptible to.

Re: Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
How awful!!! You poor thing. I have no idea how I would handle such a scary situation. You must have been petrified. I hope you're both doing much better now. That's really good that you were so well informed and knew what to tell the EMTs and knew somewhat what was going on. Thanks for informing me too on some things. I knew about Nicole's Luca, but not the rest. I will certainly file that info away in the back of my mind.

Re: Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
OMG Janice. That is SO scary I am glad Josh is okay
One question...if a child has a fever...dont put them in a bath? or do? Would he have seized regardless? If it happens the first time do you have to watch in the future, or is it random? I am sure you didnt expect anything like this. it scares me to think it could happen at anytime.

Re: Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
thanks everyone. I just keep replaying it in my head.
I would love to know how long the whole scene lasted since it felt like an eternity.
Me ped and the ER dr said that a luke warm bath is fine.
But, both advised every 4 hours on the dot with medicine. I should have given it to him first thing, but I wanted to take advantage of him laying there to get a real rectal reading.
ER said that it isn't even how high the fever gets...just at the rate it rises. So, he's had a higher temp before...but this time, I guess it just spiked at a rapid rate.

thanks, it was just so hard to think I have to put him down to make the call...I did not want to let him go, but I couldn't call with him in my arms.

Re: Yesterday Josh had a febrile seizure
how scary. It sounds like you pulled it together and did a good job. Your right about the spike causing the seizure, not the fever. A quick drop also can do it, which is why they say no cold baths.
My best friend went through this with her daughter, it is very scary
