yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

i know that not all inductions end up in a c-section but it seems like a high percentage do (especially if you are not dilated or effaced much to begin with, or if the baby is up high).

how many of you were offered an induction but based on what you heard, went right for a c-section? and how many of you had doctors who recommended this?

thanks ladies - i know i'm being a pain

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

Ava was breech, so I had no options but a c-section, but knowing what I know now about my c-section, I'd choose it over an induction. That's just me, though.

I would go with the induction, risk having a c-section. At least you know thats the worst that could happen, its going to be 50% a vag, 50% a section.

For me personally, that risk is worth it.

Since you're asking for advice, I'll share mine with you. I would wait as long as possible for an induction. Unless the sonos are saying something is wrong it is safe to wait at least 2 weeks after your due date (most docs will push for an induction sooner, but unfavorable outcomes for post-dates don't start to rise until 3 weeks past your due date).

If you have waited as long as possible and have to be induced, I would still take the induction regardless of cervical dialation. I know of at least 2 people who were induced with no dialation who delivered vaginally and avoided a C.

C's are great when you need them, but, not only can they cause complications for you and the baby, they can cause complications with future pregnancies. I think it is best to avoid them unless absolutely necessary.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I went in to be induced with cervidal (sp?) at 8pm on a Sunday night. It started contractions right away...they left it in for 12 hours... I was 3 cm dilated with regular contractions at 8am the next morning so they started potosin and thought I would progress quickly from there...but I never made it past 3cm and DD never dropped so at 4pm and almost 20 hours of labor the Dr. decided on a c-section...at that point I was fine with the decision. I was glad I had the experience of labor...but I don't feel like I misses out on anything having a c-section. The recovery really wasn't that bad.
You just never know what's going to happen. Start with the induction and give it some time...and if ends up with a section so be it. Either way you will have your baby with you before you know it.

I was induced b/c I was late and my blood pressure was starting to get too high. I was in labor for 30 hrs made it all the way to 10cm pushed for two hours and wound up with a c-section. Hailey flipped to sunnyside up during labor.

I didn't have a choice. I was told, since i was 10 days late, i would be induced.
DIDN"T DO A THING Chat Icon
after 6 plus hours i was 1 cm dialated

DO NOT if you can get induced. IMO it was the WORST experience

Me!

I didn't opt for the c just because of the likelihood at the end of an induction but it did play a big role in my decision. I also had other very very painful complications that would likely have been exacerbated by a vaginal birth had I even been able to do it (which, per my OB, would have been a 1 in a million shot since I'm little, my hips never really opened and DS was a big baby).

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I actually had an awful induction experience. I was induced about a week before my due date because my blood pressure got out of control. I was 0 cm dilated. So they start the induction, and 12 very uncomfortable hours later, guess what... STILL 0 cm dilated. I could not believe it. Meanwhile a strange thing happened early on in the 12 hrs... the contractions caused by the induction made the baby put major pressure on my bladder, so the whole day I had terrible painful pressure like I had to desperately pee, but of course my bladder was empty since you can't eat or drink, so there was no way to relieve the pain. Horrible.

They offered me the option of another 12 hr induction, but it turned out my platelet levels were dropping for some reason, and if they kept dropping over the next 12 hrs, I wouldn't be able to get an epidural or spinal! Right then I asked for a c-sec.

I would definitely not choose induction as a way to avoid a c-sec. It just seems like I have heard soooooooo many stories of failed inductions, and they all lead to c-secs in the end anyway.

I was induced and not offered a c-section. I would have only had one if I didn't progress from the induction or he couldn't get out.

I believe it is 50% of inductions end up in a section, but that means 50% don'tChat Icon

ETA: I would try the induction personally. I was induced at 39 weeks due to my BP.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

for me personally..I had 4 girls (who are all teenagers now) vaginally..one they had to induce, everything went fine..my son who is 8 months old,he turned breech the last 2 weeks,so i had a scheduled c-section..i had him at 41 yrs old (he was a surprise baby, but a great surprise)the c-section was hard for me,but i think my age had something to do with it,but i feel fine now,mostly..
i personally would induce, then c-section if you have to..but thats me.you should do what you and your doctor feels best for you and your baby.Healthy baby,Healthy Mother, thats all that matters, not how you got there..

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

i was induced and dilated to 9 cm, but too much meconium had been passed and then last minute DD turned and it would have been back labor, so c/s it was!! plus her pressure had dropped and they were scared she would undergo too much stress if delivered vaginally!!!

i believe the induction had a lot to do with it since she was totally in position hours earlier.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I was induced but begged for a c-section. They told me no so I was in labor for 30 hours with almost no progress before they finally realized she wasn't coming out the natural way. DD was too big and my pelvis too small. My doctors are not the ones that push for a c-section to make more money, thats for sure!

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I was induced after being a week late. After 36 hours of excruciating labor and not dilating past 3cm, they decided that a c section was the way to go. Honestly, I was exhausted after the 36 hours and was so glad I didnt have to push!

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I was induced because my water broke but I wasn't contracting. No one mentioned a c-section and I had a vaginal delivery after only 7 hours of labor.
So I would chose an induction again.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

Since you asked for opinions I will say that this IMO is like deciding to try a non-invasive over major surgery any day of the week.
A c/s is major surgery so you need to consider that.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

At 39 weeks 4 days I was not dialated at all, and DS was up high as my Dr said.

I asked about induction, she said if it was what I really wanted but she recommended that I do a c-section. We knew DS was big and didnt want to wait much longer to decide what to do.

She said her fear was that I would be induced , it would be a long process, and I *might* even get to push but that the baby would get stuck and I wouldnt be able to get him out. Then I would wind up with a c-section and have to recover from both labor and surgery.

She said in her experience, induction is more successful when the mother is already beginning to progress on their own.

She said it was up to me but she felt this was the best road for me. At that point they thought DS was 9lb 4oz, he was born 10 oz MORE than that. So I now agree with her., But I will say at the time making the decision was extremely hard.

My story is very similar... I was induced a week after due date..started with cervadil and continued with pitocin...I went through 27 and 1/2 hours of labor and wouldn't dilate more thatn 7 cm. My doctor was willing to wait another hour...but I chose not to...I wanted my baby...so I had c-section and happy I did...DS was facing up so vaginal delivery would have been hard on me and him.

Also...I was induced because fluid was low. My doctor was willing to wait it out as long as everything was ok..but as soon as he started noticing less fluid he did the best thing for us..

Also wanted to add...recovery was not bad...I was active after 2 weeks...ex: going up and down stairs and taking care of my son.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I have 3 kids and had 3 different doc's due to a 10 year difference between the kids. My first Dr told me i was too small and would never be able to deliver. My water broke at 10pm and he told me to go to hosp in am and would admit and do the a section. about half hour later, I started hard labor and dd heart rate was dropping so i had emergency section. For the next kid the dr was an idiot. I told him what dr one said and he said no one could see that on examination. I told him that no female in my family was able to delivery vaginally he still blew me off and told me i could be a v-bac. my water broke 2 weeks early for dd2 went to hosp they sent me home and told me to call dr in morning (instructions from my dr, I never saw him at the hosp).. I called next day they gave me an appt in the office for two days later. The dr finally agreed to see my that day and told me i could wait two weeks with my water broken. Finally he told me i had to give him 2 days and he would induce me on friday. Friday night i get induced i am in labor for 12 hours and they had to insert a cath in me to put fluid in my uterus because it was dry. Finally at 8am i start pushing going no where they take my to delivery room and use spoons and forceps it was sooo painful. final my husband looks at the dr and says you gonna section her now?? I was so done i just wanted it over they section me and have to pull the baby from my pelvic bones she was so wedged in. That summer i was on antiobiotics constantly for fevers/ infections. When i had my third dd my new dr on examination said i was too small to deliver. Had a c-section and was home 2 days later.

Sorry so long but i guess you have to do what's best for you and the baby.

Re: yet another c-section question - sorry girls!

I was going to have a scheduled c-section if I didn't go into labor by a certain date. Baby was on track to be big. I didn't want to go through an induction and was glad the my Dr. preferred the route of c-section instead.

I went into labor a week or so before the c-section date, and 4 days before my due date. I ended up with a c-section because DD got stuck at +1 station. She was 8 lbs 14 oz.
