Yet another HPV Vaccine ?
OK, my doctor recommend I get it b/c I'm in a certain age range so I said sure, whatever you say.
Now, I heard that if you are not a virgin then you should not get this vaccine because if you have already been exposed to the disease, have it and don't know it-- that it could bring it out. So basically, if you have this disease and it clears up on it's own that by getting the vaccine it could bring it out more.
Now, my Doc is well aware that I'm not a virgin-- so, why would he have me get this vaccine? Is what I heard true?
I'm going to call him but the office is on lunch right now- so I'm waiting.

Re: Yet another HPV Vaccine ?
i dont know if you read that on LIW - because i just read it and responded on there
search for HPV vaccine on WebMD or go to the gardasil website
the shot protects you from different strains so unless you have had ALL the strains it will still protect you
and it is not a "live virus" vaccine so it can't make you actually get sick.
Plus I don't know any virgins but i know MANY girls who have gotten the vaccine so that just doesn't add up!

OK, so I should be OK??
Thanks!!!
I mean, I'm certain I don't have it but what if I did and it had gone away on its own- I started to picture myself like breaking out all over the place with HPV b/c I got the vaccine LOL I get a little paranoid!

Coincidentally, I just came from my 3rd follow up appointment with my gyn. this morning after having some bad cells removed due to HPV. The first vaccine that came out only protects against certain strands - I believe 4 of the most common strands - when there are something like 20 or 30 different strands of the virus out there.
My doc believes that the recent popularity of these vaccines is actually doing a disservice to people because 85% of people come in contact with some strain of this virus, it just doesn't always develop into anything significant.

i know it is definitely not some fool proof miracle vaccine but if it decreases my chances even a little bit it was worth it for me
i did a lot of research and i think everyone should do their own research and then decide if they want the vaccine or not. for me, it was an easy choice but my sister refuses to get it for her daughter.

Re: Yet another HPV Vaccine ?
I wish Gardasil would have been around years ago when I would have been a child (or at least qualified to get it).
The recent course of events that have happened in my life may not have happened at all if a vaccine was available and worked for me. Long story short, scar tissue from a cone biopsy (with a diagnosis of HPV) left my cervix stenotic and thus I was not able to get pregnant. I had to have procedures last week under a general anesthetic and was frankly terrified that I would not be able to have children at all. The anxiety and fright I experienced, I wouldn't wish on anyone.
If I have female children, and there is more conclusive evidence that an HPV vaccine is effective and safe, I will SURELY have my daughters vaccinated. No question.

Now I can go answer that paranoid thread. I just had a cone biopsy done 7 months ago.
Actually, I think my doctor mentioned this to me as a possibility but I don't absorb medical information well.
