Young adult books for younger kids
Did anyone experience having a younger child read YA level books that are reading level appropriate but not always age appropriate?
My 11 yo has always been at least 2 grades above level with reading. She is out of the children's section at the library now. I don't want to censor these books but I notice a lot of the characters are teens and dealing with topics such as sex, drugs, alcohol and eating disorders. I prefer to have her exposed to this in books rather than internet or movies however I am not sure of she should be reading some of these. She reads a book a week and I don't have the time to read these books first to see if it's ok.
Funny thing is she actually says to me "mommy the book I'm reading is so inappropriate for my age" so I'm glad she shares that with me and opens up room for dialogue with me about the topic.
Anyone have ideas on this?

I am a Children's Librarian and I usually always recommend you speak with the YA librarian when selecting material. Many YA fiction has mature content. There are also many titles that are cross-over 5,6 7th grade books that are appropriate, the librarian can best guide her to those series or titles depending on interest. Hope this helps!

Thank you can you recommend any titles? We use the Queens library system. DD is picky about what she reads and I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't like the books the librarian suggests.
She read the Fault in our Stars. Not sure how that was.

How about judy Blume or the Sweet Valley High series ? I used to read those around that age.
I also read a lot of adult books like your daughter such as VC Andrews, but that was inappropriate as heck. Lol

The Fault in out Stars was an amazing book but I personally think it's a bit mature. Some I would recommend would be Wonder, Star Girl, When you reach me, Joan Bauer (Author),Grimm Legacy and Judy Blume, Ink Heart Series and Dork Diaries.

She read all of Dork Diaries and Judy Blume in 4th grade she is past those levels now and is going into 6th grade. Someone gave her Nancy Drew but she is not into mysteries just "chick lit". I also read Sweet Valley High when I was 12 I will try to find them and see if she will read them. I will check out the other titles too.

what about Kindgom Keepers series. I bought one for my now 11yo neice last year, but she is ahead too, has read the hunger game series. SO it is sometimes hard to pick books out for her.

-Jane Eyre
-Wuthering Heights
-Pride and Prejudice
-Lord of the Rings
-To Kill a Mockingbird
-Little Women
-All Creatures Great and Small
I was in your DD's shoes... Too young content wise but waaayyyy over reading level. My mom would get me the classics and as a result I have read most of the "great literature"! Of course, eventually I figured out how to sneak Stephen King and more "adult" fiction, and I'm sure she will too, LOL!

My 11 year old just read the Hunger Games series so I totally understand where you are coming from with the struggle keeping her interested.
Have you tired the Lightning Thief series? We read it when she was younger but it's definitely something an older kid would be interested in -plus it has carryover value when they do the history of Greece & Greek mythology in 6th grade (and for me for my college classics course). Rick Riordan also has other series with Roman & Eyptian mythology. Norse is coming out soon.
-39 Clues series (value in that it's a series of clues to solve plus history of famous people & countries)
-Calvin & Hobbes comic strips (no carryover value but awesome nontheless!)
She's started the Book Thief but it was a difficult read so we're tabling it for when she has to read historical fiction in 7th grade.
She also told me the series she was reading was inappropriate. There was dating, kissing, etc but no sex. Fault in Our Stars is about 2 kids with cancer & yup, they do have sex.

Not sure if it's too dated, or even still available, but how about "The Babysitter's Club" series? I think the girls in the books were middle school aged and while there was some stuff about boys, etc. that would appeal to a young girl, they were pretty wholesome.
I also used to really like the Anne of Green Gables series (the books follow Anne as she grows up, dates, gets married).
Or even the Little House on the Prairie books. Same idea, where the girls start out young but get older as the series progresses.
By the way - someone mentioned Sweet Valley High. I read the "Sweet Valley High" books as a kid, too, but I think the content was pretty mature... I remember there were story lines about cocaine use, drinking, etc. ETA - Must have made an impression on me because I am 38 and can remember the specifics of Sweet Valley High books I read in 7th grade, lol!

You can shield them, it just takes some work and effort!

Try the Al Capone series. It is historical fiction and not racy or explicit. Al Capone Does My Shirts is the first in the series.
Has little to do with Al Capone and more to do with autism, right from wrong, family dynamics.

I was your daughter. My mom didn't really shield me. I remember thinking that some of the stuff I read that was "explicit" was just silly. Lol.
I also teach middle school ELA. Some good books for a 6th grader though:
The outsiders
Sweet valley series
A time for dancing
Searching for David's heart
Shiver
Walter Dean Myers books
Sharon Flake books
Sharon Creech books
Eta: it's ok if she's reading books below her level, as long as some are on her level. At this point in time - from a literacy specialist perspective - I'd let her read what interests her.
