young child with anxiety
Are there any parents out there with a young child (4 yrs old) that is suffering with anxiety? My daughter seems to be getting worse and we are torn on what to do and where to go? She is afraid of the dark, afraid something is going to happen to us, afraid to use the potty by herself, and now its to the point she is afraid to cross the room without one of us with her. I hate to see her struggling with this. I spoke to my pediatriacian and he wasn't too helpful? She has been evaluated because I thought she had sensory issues initially. Cognitively she scored in the gifted range. I wonder if anxiety is somehow related to this? Please help..anyone out there that has been where I am. My husband is looking into psychologists that take our insurance but so far either they don't work with children or they aren't accepting new patients.

My DD has extreme anxiety. She has multiple other issues but the anxiety is what is holding her back more than anything else. Pediatrician's aren't going to help. It is more than what they can handle. Your best bet is finding a psychologist, there are a ton of child psychologists out there or make an appointment for a Dev Ped. Our Dev Ped started her on Prozac at about 5 years old and it helped a bit but now it is even worse than ever so we just started our intake with Stony Brook Outpatient psychology center. She needs some thing much stronger than prozac. Once you find a doctor there are many behavioral techniques they can use to help before medication is tried. We done social classes, started cognitive behavior therapy and a multitude of others. The first step is to find a doctor who takes your insurance and go from there.
