young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

we bought a 3 bedroom house.
one is obviously the master.
one will be a guest room..

and the third will be??? ....

what have you done with the extra rooms when it was just you and FH/DH/SO??

we were going to make it an office but since we both just moved out of our parents house we dont own furniture and i dont want to spend a lot of money on office furniture if it will eventually be a .. coughcough..ahem. nursery??

should we just keep it empty? use for storage? just buy cheapo office furniture that we wont care about getting rid of once we have a bbbbbbaby. (i cant even say it - LOL)

so tell me, what did you do??/would you do??

we are moving from a 3 bed to a 2 bed (yeah sounds crazy i know)
but the only thing we used the 3rd bedroom for was a tv room - DH plays xbox in there and thats it. So you could buy a futon throw a tv in there and it could be easily changed back to a nurseryChat Icon

well, a den/man room would be an option but we have a high ranch so we have a livingroom upstairs with a TV, and below it there is an informal den aka man cave so im trying not to make the 3rd bedroom another den but i might not have any other option..

futon is a good idea, theyre cheap and we do have a lot of friends that im sure will be crashing at our house a lot..

thanks

keep the ideas coming!! Chat Icon TIA!

Our first home was a spilt. One room was storage, one the master and then one was our den with TV. That is where we were most of the time.
Looking back I have no idea why we did that because we had a LRChat Icon .
A year later we found out we were PG and we made the den into the baby's room and then the storage room into a guest room.

I would just use it for storage.

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

When we had 2 free bedrooms one was a guestroom. The other was an office. We need to have an office because DH being in sales needs a home office to work from. It was also used as a "junk" room for all that stuff that has no place to go.

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

As a 2 bedroom home owner first of all i am jealous! Things I'd do with that room if i had it...

1) make it a craft room (if you do that stuff)
2) make it a workout room...weights, tv, matts on the floor
3) reading room..a comfy chair or two & some bookshelves
4) an office..Staples, Office Max has really cheap desks & stuff

most of all..enjoy your house!Chat Icon

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

We used it as a storage room but to be honest I wish we did more with it. It turned into a junk room! Now we actually renovated our house and made it into a family room/office for DH who works from home.

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

At first, we had one as an office/computer room and the other as storage.

Then, we invited a friend to live with us, so it helped us with the bills and gave him a place to live Chat Icon

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

We have 4 bedrooms -- one is the master, one on our lower level is a guest suite, one is our gym, and the last is our office.

If you don't have the furniture for it now and don't want to spend money on stuff you won't really use, I would just leave it empty. If you have a lot of company, you can always stick an air mattress in there -- or you can get a futon and keep it in there.

I would leave it empty or like you said - use it for storage.

We have a "nursery" too - all of our china is stored in the closet in there. We have a treadmill in there, a TV and random free weights. It's our workout/storage room.

1 bedroom we are using as a guest bedroom and the smaller room we are using as an office. we are just using the old desks we have now and eventually move them down to the den or somewhere else in the house when we eventually use the room as a nursery.

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

a few ideas we have come up with...

1) all purpose office/crafts/computer room....
2) giant walk-in closet
3) all purpose tv/entertainment room
4) gym

in all reality we would probably go with the office idea....

we have a high ranch and the extra bedroom is an office that will later be a nursery - it has a futon and i bought an inexpensive desk from ikea that attaches to a book case - i figure down the line i can take the desk off and use the bookcase in another direction in a nursery - the futon is hand me down - but it is nice to have a place to oragnize bills and other stuff

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

we made ours an office. You can get cheap furniture at staples that is what we did. Or furnakit

we didnt make a guestroom. We had one room we used as storage. Now it is a baby's room and we put an office in the basement and freed up a room so maybe that will be a guest room.

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

we have kids but we still have a bunch of extra bedrooms-one is a guest room, another is our workout room & the last is my DH's office/guest room which is currently being used as the "puppy room".
I've been trying to convince my DH to make our gym room into a huge closet and make his office into the gym.

An easy inexpensive thing to do would be a nice book shelf and some sort of chair & ottoman that could eventually be used in a nursery. You'd have a nice reading/sitting room.

Our extra bedroom is a library. We got some cheap wood bookshelves, painted them fun colors, and put them all along one wall so they look sort of like built-ins. There's a window seat with comfy cushions and few comfy (but cheap) chairs.

this is totally what we are doing. we also have a Hi-Ranch. It will never just stay empty because you will use it for all the stuff that you just don't know what to do with it.Chat Icon because that is what happened to ours.Chat Icon we are going to clear it out soon & find a home for everything in there & make it an office.

we have 4 bedrooms so right now 3 are extra. one is a guest room, one is being left empty because it will be a nursey (we are using the smallest one, since we will leave it a nursey for more children later) and then the other one is set up as an office.
I already had a desk and a long table for sewing. since I do a lot of work in there I really need that room. once we have 2 kids though I have no idea where the office will be because I can't get rid of my guest room, maybe I will move the office to the basement. I need a place for my dad to stay when he comes in. hopefully by that point we will have upgraded to a larger house Chat Icon

Re: young married couple - what to do with extra bedrooms?

Try craigslist too for cheap office furniture.

50 DOLLARS.

Slap some paint on it - do a funky color like red or baby blue - good to go. A really nice size desk - WITH a hutch.

eta: Brand new in box - $110 (or $125) - sells at Staples for $220. AND this puppy is in Smithtown - isn't that close to you?
