that is sickening. To think someone might be trying to kill me, and those are the last words I ever hear. Disgusting.

it doesn't make a difference what the reason of being put on hold is.... imagine grasping for the phone while having a heart attack, hiding from a burglar with a gun, or being injured / losing blood, and having to wait several minutes.... you likely will die waiting

inexcusable.....

Add me to the list of "please hold on" while calling 911. Happened to me last 4th of July. Kids were setting off M80's in front of my house...at 2 am! I was on hold for over 5 minutes.

Maybe if people would only call 911 in a true emergency, we wouldn't have this problem. But people call 911 because there are kids being too loud, or a landscaper is running a maching before 8am, etc.

Shame on 911!!!!!!Chat Icon

it has nothing to do with 911. it has to do with politicians that only allow x amount of workers to be paid. my sister has been a suffolk county 911 operator for close to 8 years and i used to worked with the 911 operators and dispatchers in SC HQ for 3yrs... there's anywhere from 10-25 911 operators working at a time, as well as a dispatcher for each precinct, plus highway patrol and 2 floaters. there are times that they sit for HOURS without a call. i doubt any business would hire 50 people to work ALL the time, when sometimes 5 would cover the job. this is a job that is 24hrs a day, 7days a week, 365days a year. they don't get nights off, or xmas or new years or summers or any other holiday or moment that a lot of people take for granted... so before anyone says shame on 911, they should think about whose fault it really is. the county's maybe for not supplying enough money for extra staffing? or the idiots that call 911 for EVERY little thing. and don't shut up.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH For those of you that think this is unexceptable go sit in your local 911 dispatch center. You would be very suprised to see what really happens inside those walls. 911 dispatchers are no different then anyone else. We go to work and do our best just like you do. We are not superhuman, we do not have an endless supply of people to do the job, and we DO NOT put people on hold on purpose. If it's THAT disturbing to you go apply for a job. You know i'm sick to death of 911, EMS, Fire, and Police getting screwed. If everyone who was p*ssed sat in a center, or went for a ride along you would have a VERY different perspectiveChat Icon

I think what people are saying is someones at FAULT here....The county is whom your saying, then so be it. I dont care WHO's Fault it is, I would just want it fixed.

I find no reasonable excuse to be put on hold for a 911 call.

I would love to work in that job if they were hiring, so lets complain to the counties, lets do whatever....but its NOT acceptable, bottom line.

Im not seeing where anyone is blaming the operators and I doubt that the world will get rid of "idiots" any time soon who call for every little thing, so whats the next step?

ETA- a LOT of professions are staffed 24/7 ...a whole lot, so I dont see how that plays into it AT ALL?

No one told anyone who works there to do it, if they didnt like it, then just like any other job or person, they should find something else...but again, what does the staffing hours have anything to do with being put on hold.

Sounds like we are trying to find someone to blame and the correct someone.

Dont take it so personal?

I know this wasn't a personal post, and she was venting, BUT it's hard not to take it personal. I live in MI so I don't know how you guys hire in NY. Here we just had 30 people apply and start taking the EMD class and of that 30 peole 2 yes 2 took the job. You're right lots of people work 24/7, but these ae suck unique jobs that most people don't want them. I would LOVE to tell people not to call, or that they are not having an emergency but I can't......I have to be the "bigger" person. Staffing is ALWAYS an issue EVERYWHERE and 911 is no exception. Our center hires based on need. Yes we have CRAZY busy nights and slow nights also. It would not be reasonable to have 7 dispatchers when 4 are needed just in case something happened. I agree you shouldn't be put on hold when you call 911, but I also understand sometimes the system gets taxed. If it's an ongoing problem go to county meetings or find out who to talk/b*tch to and ry to get it fixed. I know it wasn't ment to blame people but I do take some of it personal. I am a dispatcher and I am a Paramedic. Try to imagine if I posted something negative about your job and others agreed and were mad too. I'm sorry if I souund rude, I just...........I take it personal
