Your Christmas tree over the years...

So DH and I decorated our tree tonight. I noticed that we have a lot of "just married" ornaments that our friends gave us. One ornament was an "engaged 2004" ornament that I put up, thinking that we wouldn't be able to put it up years from now. Which got me to thinking... as years go by, and you are married longer and have kids, does the theme of your tree change? Do you still put on your "first Christmas together" ornaments, or are they now keepsakes? If you have kids, is your tree now more homemade ornaments? If your kids are now older, do still put up those ornaments they made when they were 5?

I'm just curious. I have only had a tree for a few years, so I can't say from experience. Is your tree a reminder of both past AND present, or just the present?

I put them all on, engaged, wedding, new baby, etc. My parents started giving me ornaments when I was around 5 years old. I have every ornament since and they all go up on the tree. The whole tree is a keepsake.

My son is 20 and I still put his baby's first christmas ornaments on, as well as a bunch that he made & we made together over the years. DH & I are married 5 years, together 7 & I put all of the ornaments we've got as gifts as well as the ones we collected on vacations. I have a few DSD made, I also have a few special ornaments from my childhood, DH's childhood & a few from my late grandma.
In addition to that I have glass ornaments in our color scheme. We have a pretty big tree. I love remembering where it all came from.

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

Our tree is family related, starting with our engagement ornament. I then got an ornament for us for each year. Then when we had kids we added them on with of course the first xmas ornament. I now add an family ornament for each and then an ornament representing the theme of the kids b-days for that year. I bought a Cars ornament for my ds and a Dora ornament for DD also for this years b-days. I also buy an ornament for any big event or milestone they had for that year. Ex: Big brother, big Sister ornaments, a soccer one for ds because this was his first year in soccer. Oh I also buy our dog an ornament for each year.

Our tree has tons of homemade ornaments from my kids and everytime we go on vacation we get an ornament... I love decorating the tree and going through all the memories and when my kids are old enough and off in college I'll still put up the ornaments they made in KindergartenChat Icon

Both past & present. It will be 8 years in January & my favorite ornament is still a handpainted "Just Married ...2000" on it.

We have ornaments from our trips when we were engaged & married. I love looking at old ones, the handprint plaster ones of the kids when they were little, ones I've collected over the years.

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

With our first tree - Rob and I had a VERY blank tree. We had a couple of our own ornaments - but outside of that... not much. My mother gave me some of the ornaments I had made and an ornament from the year I was born. We couldn't afford much, so we bought a couple of things - but for the most part it was lights and a beaded garland.

The next year we received some, bought a couple and the tree was a little fuller.

We are now 7 years in with our 'together' tree. We have a lot of ornaments now. Most of the ornaments have some meaning to us. We have a tradition of unwrapping the ornaments and telling stories about what each one means and who gave it to us or who made it for us before putting it on the tree. Our older son knows most of those tales by heart - but he still loves to hear them and repeat them.

When my sons move to their own place, I will pack some ornaments for each of them - the ones that they made or that seem to mean the most to them - so that they can have a head start on their own trees. One day, I hope that my kids will unwrap the "my first Christmas" ornament that we bought when they were infants and share them with their own children.

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

Our tree is defiinately filled with past & present ornaments. Both my mom & MIL gave DH & I ornaments from when we were younger when we moved out. I still put them on the tree yearly bc they are part of our past! I have ornaments that my late grandfather had handmade. I think even as we have kids, I will continue to add & add.

My mom still puts my brother & my "first" ornaments on the tree & we are 33 & 28 respectively!!!! I truly believe the ornaments & the stories behind them make the tree what it is....

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

Married 10 years in April and my favorite ornament is a Lenox "Our First Christmas 1998" ornament. It's the first ornament I hang on the tree every year...and every year it always goes in the same spot on the tree as well.

I also have my kids' ornaments hung as well. My older Chat Icon is almost 6, but of course, will always hang his "first" ornaments as well.

Ditto this too. I love seeing all our ornaments from our years together. My parents tree hasn't changed over the years either. They still put up ornaments we gave them in 1989 and before! It's fun to pull them all out and remeber who gave them to you and where you got them from.

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

Considering my parents still put our "baby's first christmas" ornaments on their tree, I don't think ours will change much over the years. We'll add more ornaments, sure, but the special ones will always go on.

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

We still have all our first christmas together, first home together ornaments up. I actually dropped and broke our first christmas ornament and DH just bought me a replacement (he found it in ebay), because I was so upset.

We have less filler ornaments now, because we buy ornaments after Christmas. We have gone over to all glass blown ornaments on the tree and put our Lenox style ones on a metal ornament hanging tree I bought.

Past and present. I LOVE all of our old ornaments from when we were dating and engaged. There are a lot of great memories with our ornaments and I can't imagine only putting up new ones each year!

I have ornaments that my mom has been giving to me since birth.

My DH & I gt an ornament every year based on what happend between us.

They all go on!

The tree is a keepsake, I rather make room for the memories than fillers like balls and ribbons!

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

we have first christmas together (dating) and the year, we have engaged and the year and just married and the year - they are each so special and i will always put them up. the reason i wanted them was so that in thirty years i could look back on them and have our kids look at them - and it is nice that they are eached labeled with the years. also, we have special ones for our dog and once we have kids we will have special ones for them too that we will always keep.

a new tradition we recently started was getting an ornament from each place we travel - so, we have one from our HM to hawaii, one from our recent trip to disney, one from our very first vaca together to barbados, etc. it is really nice. Chat Icon

Re: Your Christmas tree over the years...

We keep the same ornaments and add a few each year. We wind up putting less and less of the generic ball ones. And yes, we still put up our 1st x-mas ones and Baby's 1st xmas.
