Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
OMG my Mom is KILLING me with her computer skills. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. For months she has been harassing me to post her favorite pics to her Facebook profile, as she has no idea how to do it. (yet somehow she has figured out how to post links to videos and other webpages).
So, the other day she says, "Mary keeps trying to write messages to me on FB (IM), and I write back, but she never responds...I wonder if she is getting my messages?" So, I say....did you press 'send' or 'enter' after you typed to her? And my Mom was like, "ohhhh, no, I didn't".
Then when I'm trying to show her something on the Internet, I tell her to go to the web address bar and type in www.(whateveritis).com...she looks around with a blank look on her face.
We are talking about a woman who has been using the computer for years...the learning curve just isn't there. Sometimes I am sympathetic, but usually I can't help but get frustrated.
Is there a class for people who literally don't know how to press enter???

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
I think of this all the time-and then I get scared thinking, "is that how I'm going to be with whatever technology is around when I'm her age"

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
A lot of times when I get the school district library catalog, it lists activities for kids but also classes for adults and seniors. A bunch of times they have had computer classes, such as "Email for beginners". They are usually free.

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
My dad is pretty clueless with internet stuff, but my mom teaches me things; she works with computers.
My MIL is like the OP's mom and I just can't understand it. I mean my mom gets it, why can't my MIL get it.

My MIL would literally need a class to learn where the on/off switch is! She has no clue at all about computers and no desire to learn either

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
my mom is pretty decent on the computer but my dad
I swear if he didn't watch my mom play around with her laptop, he wouldn't even know what a computer does.
Once a few years ago my brother sat my father down at the computer to show him somethings. My brother wanted my dad to click on something so he said "Click the mouse to select"
my dad clicked the mouse PAD I haven't laughed that hard in a while.

my grandma is actually pretty tech savvy but I was dying when she couldnt figure out why her e-mail to a company wasnt going through (she was addressing the email to their website link -- ie: sending the email to "www.target.com" and not whatever their customer service email is

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
My parents don't have a computer and have no desire to learn to be computer literate. However, the constantly ask me to look up something for them. I don't mind but it gets annoying.

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
My Dad asks me constantly how to burn a CD. I even wrote him instructions to take with him when he winters in Florida so I don't have to talk him through it over the phone and he still asks.
It can get a little annoying but I keep doing it because he's my Daddy.

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
I go through this crap with my parents ALL the time! My mom and dad are both 59. My mom works full time as an administrative assistant and is on the PC all day long! We exchange emails ALL the time but as soon as she gets home, where her home PC is, she acts like its a space ship that has landed on her desk. Like she's never seen one before. To a point where I don't think she even knows how to turn it on let alone check her home email. And my dad...forget it!! He hasn't touched it since they got it 8 months ago!

Ok, but I bet your mom doesn't use the term "internet her pictures to me"..what da #$@%...
She wants me to email my DD's pictures...oh Jesu!
The first time she said it, I was like please don't even tell me you've said that to another living being! I doubt she knows how to turn on a computer...she's 63. My MIL is pretty computer savvy though! She's 62. Don't get it!!

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
My mom is getting much better.
However my MIL will write me an email...so i'll write back almost immediately. She will have already turned her computer off, and will call me asking me the same question that she just emailed me about. I don't think she gets the 'purpose' of email.

Re: Your parents / elders and bad computer skills
My parents know the basics. My dad is always telling me he has to defrag
I feel that my MIL doesn't want to try. She can do a lot of stuff but when it's something new she says she doesn't know how. I don't know why she asks me especially when I've never done it. Ex. she wanted to post her car for sale on cars.com and said she didn't know how. Well I never sold my car so how would I know?
