zantac moms/Acid Reflux
DS is 11 months old. He's on zantac 3 times a day- 1.3ml each dose.
We recently have been weaning him off of it and are down to just 1 bottle. However i think it's affecting him and we might not be able to take him off of it. I was really hoping we could. Especially since he's mainly on table food and we've recently started to mix formula and whole milk in his bottles.
Those with older babies/children... when did your dc go off zantac/prevacid, etc?

Re: zantac moms
We transitioned DS off of Zantac at 12 months. He had been on it 1.2ml twice a day at that point. We went to once a day for awhile. He seemed to be better on whole milk. He still had incidents where it seems like he needs it. We did try putting him back on a low dose around 18 months, but he actually got worse when he was back one it (I was reeading that as kids get older, their reactions to those medicines can change and even though it was good for them when they were younger, it might not be good as they get older). He's 25 months now and much better, but does have the occassional indigestion and has spit up a handful of times, but the doc said that's not enough to warrant another med.

Re: zantac moms/Acid Reflux
Jacob was on zantac from when he was about 2 months until 1 year. We tried to wean him off at the point and the reflux started again. He went back on and he was eventually off totally a few months later.

Re: zantac moms/Acid Reflux
Well we just went to a new pediatrician for jacens 11 month checkup.
She was surprised the other pediatrician never tested his urine. I guess something to do with the reflux or to make sure he doesn't have an infection of some sort. So she wants to test that. She also wants to send jacen to a GI specialist. She's wondering if he's reflux is worse than we thought. She's all for him staying on the zantac, but thinks he might need an additional med. She wonders if that's why we've had such a hard time with his sleeping and why he wakes (also why we can’t wean him yet). She was also a little bit concerned about his weight and him being so small. Even though he is growing, she wonders if his weight and reflux go hand in hand more than we think. It just stinks because the closest specialist to us is in stonybrook (which is hike for us).
Did anyone else take their dc to a specialist?

Alexa has been seeing a GI specialist since 3 weeks. She has VERY SEVERE acid reflux. We see a Specialist at teh Children's Hospital at Yale (we live in CT). Zantac did nothing for us, she is on a high does of prevacid and was doing good for a while but it's flairing up again and so we are looking to switch meds.
Kids with acid reflux tend to be low weight gainers, they don't eat as much at once to "protect" themselves from refluxing. Also, when her reflux flairs up her sleeping is a lot worse.
Hopefully they can get him on a new medication that will help him feel better and he will start sleeping more. This being said, I reccomend you Don't use CIO method for sleeping until the reflux is under control. Letting a baby with reflux get too uspet aggrevates their GI track even more and makes the situation worse.
Good news is that once we got the right medication for Alexa we saw an improvement in 36-48 hours!
FM if you ever have any questions!

Re: zantac moms/Acid Reflux
DS (almost 6 months) goes to a GI specialist- Dr. Gold. We actually had him there this week b/c he is throwing up all solids and refusing to eat the bottle again. He had him do an upper GI series Thurs. to check everything out, but it came back normal. Im waiting to hear from him what the next step is.
Like your DS, he is on axid- 1.3 ml 3 x a day + Maalox 3 ml- 3 x a day, and still wont eat. He is gaining weight, but is still on the small side. Its frustrating to see him uncomfortable whenever he eats! He has been sleeping terrible because of this "flair up"
I hope you get some answers from a specialist! GL

Re: zantac moms/Acid Reflux
Well, I would bring a dirty diaper because they like to test it every time we go. They will evaluate him, maybe change his meds. They might talk about doing an upper GI test. Who are you seeing in Stonybrook? Dr. Gold is in Babylon, in the Good Samaritan Pediatric Specialty Center, I dont know if this is closer to you.
ETA:" The upper GI test isnt done in the office, it is done at the hospital.

Re: zantac moms/Acid Reflux
A poopy diaper.
The GI test consisted of DS drinking Barium, and as I fed him from the bottle, they used an x-ray type machine to watch him swallow. It checked to see if there were any blockages, malformations, or inflammation of the esophogus, stomach and first part of the small intestines. It lasted approx. 20 mins.

So no blood work? I just hate the idea of ds going through any more needles and so forth.
Now what happens if he won't drink the barium?

DS hasnt had blood work yet. DS would not drink the barium o the used a siringe that was like a foot long and squirted it down his throat. Not to scare you, but it wasnt the most pleasant experience. I cried and DS screamed! I was very thankful when it was over!
