Zika virus and Puerto Rico
We have a family wedding in Puerto Rico next weekend which I was planning to attend (we are going thurs-Mon). Now all this news is coming out about the Zika virus and possible connections to birth defects in Brazil, and they just confirmed the first case of it in PR. Would you still go? It's mosquito-borne.

I would go. One case versus a complete outbreak is totally diff. Talk to your ob.

Re: Zika virus and Puerto Rico
That would make me a little nervous... mosquitos seem to love pregnant women. I'd ask my OB- if she was okay with it, I'd still go.

Re: Zika virus and Puerto Rico
I talked to OB last night. She basically said she has no reason to tell me not to go, and on the Zika virus thing, she wasn't really concerned. So...I guess I'm going? Argh. Hate that this is happening so close to the trip!

I don't know about the Bahamas but we booked a trip to PR 2 weeks ago for February and we will not be going.
If it's not in the Bahamas then I would goo..if not I would skip it.

I was just at my OB yesterday and they had a sign up listing all the places the CDC recommended avoiding if pregnant. I don't recall seeing Bahamas as one of them.

FYI there are already cases of the zika virus in the us. Florida, Ilinois, Texas and even a baby born in Hawaii with birth defects.

Re: Zika virus and Puerto Rico
I think they said all those people that have it in the US recently traveled overseas...Brazil, Columbia, Caribbean.
Honestly though as much as I would love to we are going to avoid any tropical climate until after DD is born.

The article says all of the US Zika virus cases were contracted when traveling overseas. So nobody has contracted the disease while in the US yet (mainland). There are areas of the Caribbean on the list of places to avoid but the Bahamas isn't one of them.

Re: Zika virus and Puerto Rico
Well, I went. They upped the warning to do not travel when I was already there (previously it said to take precaution, bug spray, etc.). Honestly it wasn't buggy there at all, I did use bug stuff the entire time but there were barely any mosquitoes. It was in teh 70s/low 80s but just not buggy at all. And I was outside a lot and on all different parts of the island. There were at least 5 other pregnant women also at the wedding I was at. If the warning had been upped before I went, I might not have gone, but I'm glad I got to go and nothing happened.
I wouldn't plan a trip now, though. Just in case.
