Did you see DeBlasio's brilliant plan for inadequate space? : Outdoor Classes

It's like he's trying to make sure everyone chooses remote instead of blended classes.

I don't know of any kid who could concentrate enough to learn outside, sitting on the street, while cars pass by on side streets.

And what about when winter comes??? This isn't south florida

I HATE defending DiBlasio, but...in this case, in his defense, he did not think outdoor classrooms were a good idea. The principals union was pushing for it, so he gave in.

I still want to know how they plan to have outdoor classes in the winter.

They don't. It will probably only work for Sept & Oct, and again in April/May/June.

So basically waste money setting this up for two months, not even with holidays and school starting late? Am I losing my mind thinking this is the dumbest sh!t ever? Chat Icon

I don't think it makes ANY sense, but a lot of principals, teachers, and parents were really pushing for it, as well as multiple members of the city council.

and what are they going to do if it rains?
What about fall, when it gets windy? how are you keeping books from flying away?
how do you hear the teacher above the noise?
Our school just finished building an expansion, which means we lost half our yard. I very much doubt that the residents on the side street will want the access to their homes blocked 5 days a week.

That's because nothing makes logical sense anymore. People push for it, but it makes no sense. But they feel satisfied that the schools are doing it.

Such a waste of money and resources.

If you think about it too- April is freezing in NY. It snows in April sometimes. May is no prize either in the beginning of the month.
Sometimes May is insanely rainy and cool.
So basically you have Sept and Oct- and even Oct gets dicey towards the end.
Perhaps they can put snow parkas on the school supply list.

Yes the weather in the north east is so unpredictable. My birthday is in the beginning of May and I never know if I’m getting a nice spring day or a cold rainy fall day. Lol. Our seasons are not consistent.

Now a 10 day delay for in-person. I don't understand what 10 days is going to do. You have had months to get it together.

The 21st won't happen either. Teachers are flipping out that they have to go in next Tuesday. And now because they couldn't figure it out, NYC catholic schools may also be forced to remain closed. So unfair and ridiculous.

I have zero source for this, but I believe DeBlasio/unions won't have NYC teachers back in person for awhile. I have no source, no proof, and I could be wrong. But just a hunch. Editing to say that I'm watching him being interviewed now and he says they will certainly return after the delayed opening and that he wants them in person and so do parents.

we have a union meeting on friday. building reports will be going to the union on thursday and based on what the reports say, teachers may not be going in on the 8th either.

I am relieved that students won't be coming in yet. But if it's because the buildings are unsafe, what message are they sending to us as staff members? That we're disposable?

NYC Schools?

How is it that most LI schools got their $hit together and did what needed to be done in order to open on time?!?!?!
NYC knew when the first day was, they had plenty of time to get this done.

You do realize how big the NYC school 'districts' are, correct? You are literally comparing apples to oranges.

And we didn't know when the first day was, it was widely speculated what it would be, but there is no official calendar for the 20/21 school year for the NYC schools.

My son's school, as are a bunch of other local schools within NYC are ready to go, we've had our inspections, etc. but because they are pieces of a very large pie, it makes it difficult. Just because we've passed all our inspections doesn't mean that we can open because we are part of NYC

I could be COMPLETELY wrong, so if I am, please forgive me. Would you be there for classroom setup? Because in that case, wouldn't teachers be alone in their room? We found out today that NYC catholic schools will be reopening on time (thank God), we have been in our buildings since August 12th, and sometimes not alone, but congregated with other teachers, and there have been zero issues.
Also, and this is not directed at you, please know that...on a Facebook group I am on, this is way DOE teachers are saying...
I will not go back in person. I will also not live teach all day. I will not allow the school to take my temp or make me get a covid test, my body my choice. I will never take a vaccine. They are saying they will allow none of this.
Ok, so, in that case...there is nothing that can ever be done to get these people back in school? One can understand why some may be looking at certain DOE teachers in dismay right now.

NYC Schools?

I do not think that NYC will ever go back to full in person until there is a vaccination. Their buildings are too crowded, the buildings are old and they have poor ventilation. What they should have done, is created a robust online format and made sure that every student has a device. Then if they have locations that can be made "safe" have the children who truly need someplace to go a day care/rec center of sorts where they can access the internet to participate in online learning. That way most teachers can work from home and the ones who want to come in can support the children that were brought into rec centers can. Nothing is going to be ideal but they really need to start thinking outside the box.

My sister is a PE teacher in a private school on LI and because of decreased class sizes and an infux of students switching from public school she was told her gym was now to be used as 2 classrooms and that she should invest in rain boots and good winter wear because all of her classes will be outdoors. Rain, snow, doesnt matter. Shes losing her mind over it, and she doesnt think the parents were notified of it either.. $hitshow to say the least...

I am not going in early to set up my classroom, but that is because if we are told to go in sept 8th still, i have like 9 days to do that now. I am not an elementary teacher, though, so i move all around the building. I don't really have to set up anything

Re: NYC Schools?

Your child is better fully Remote honesty. Especially if they are in a large school with 3 hybrid groups. They will Go 1-2 days a week.

There are not enough teachers so somehow I will be teaching in person - few periods and then some periods remote to the 2 groups Home every day. I do t see how the hybrid groups will get what they need academically.

I’m not in NYC, but I am teaching in-person hybrid, 100% virtual and 100% in-person all in the same period. I have received absolutely no training on how to do this. They have given us no guidelines. My students are not 1:1 so many will not have devices. I will see hybrid students ONE day a week in person.

The camera and mic on my brand new school issued computer are terrible. Zoom often crashes. I somehow need to yell with the mask on so students virtually can hear me as I will not be right on top of the computer the entire time. They are not providing us with mics to amplify our voices.

My school has 325 (unmasked) students in one lunch section for 40 minutes.
