Questions about self quarantine
My cousin is returning from an unexpected trip out west-she had to go last minute to help her grandmother who was hospitalized. When she returns to NY she’ll need to self quarantine. There’s lots of info on line but we still have questions!
She’s a mom of 4, one with special needs. There’s no way she can exist in separate quarters for 14 days. Her DH is an essential worker.
With school starting, can she drive her kids to school? I’m not sure what her district bus options are.
May be a dumb question, but can she go for a walk?
Between peapod, Amazon, DH and our cousins we can cover whatever is needed in the house.
She just wants to do the right thing and is a bit anxious about it all.
Has anyone had to self isolate like this?

Re: Questions about self quarantine
I don’t know anyone who has done this personally but my building sends out news updates on Covid. Lol.
You’re expected to isolate yourself and do a full quarantine if possible. However, that’s not realistic for everyone, such as your cousin. Self-quarantine you are still allowed to go to supermarkets and do essential tasks similarly the way it was in March. Looks like you guys are stepping in, which, is awesome. Since she has to take her kids to school, she can wear a mask in the car if she wants to be super vigilant.
I feel like it’s more of, don’t go out eating, to parties etc. I’m sure others would disagree, but she can go for walks and isolate. That’s my opinion.
I say, If they can have the fukn VMAs then she can take care of her kids and get fresh air. Lol.

Questions about self quarantine
In our district - our kids aren't allowed to attend school if someone in the household has visited one of those states on the list within 14 days.
I would have her get tested as well for peace of mind - since she will be around her family. She technically still has to quarantine but, she won't be passing the virus along to her family.
I assume she is flying too - the state will call and check in and make sure you are home, my coworker was getting calls last week after going to see her kids in the midwest.

I think so many people are going to lie about this and symptoms on those attestations we have submit for school

I agree!
I wanted to add that it's crazy too that many of the states that do have a quarantine, allow you to not quarantine if you have a negative test but NY doesn't.

Re: Questions about self quarantine
My best friend just tested positive and had to self-quarantine.
Walks were ok! She was told to just stay in her room during quarantine but then again, she had tested positive so it may be different circumstances.
Your friend can also call 311 for guidance if she'd like!

People will lie, but that does not mean that people should.
According to the rules at my school, I would keep my children home until my 14 day quarantine period is over. I would not want to be responsible for potentially having the virus and passing it onto my child and then to their classmates.
People not following the rules is exactly why schools will shut down again.

A negative test means nothing that's why. Someone can develop the virus up to 14 days after exposure. You get tested when you get back - day 1 and get your "negative" results on day 3 - and then go about your business as normal. Meanwhile, you didn't have detectable virus on Day 1, but you do on Day 3 and now you carry on with your life like normal and infect others.

Most people don't even have house phones now, so they give their cell phone. Calling them means nothing- they could be anywhere.

They may also stop by your house announced. Similar to how they do with the NYPD when you call in sick.

True, but I can't imagine they have the man power to do that with the amount of people on the quarantine list coming in from flights every day. This state is such a disaster and so inefficient in every single thing I can't imagine them being able to handle the scope of something like that. It's a good idea in theory though. I just wonder how much it really goes into practice. I also wonder what kind of ID these people carry. As a woman, I never ever ever answer the door to anyone who I don't know. I'm super paranoid like that. Do they hold up a state ID to the Ring camera? The paranoid side of me can see people pretending to be from the "state" and pushing their way into people's homes. But yeah, I watch a lot of TV.

Questions about self quarantine
Thanks for the replies, everyone! She received a call from a contact tracer two days after she returned to NY. They will check in daily via phone call or text, whichever is preferred. Her school district said kids are allowed to school, no quarantine needed since they didn’t travel with her Off to drop off treats for my nieces n nephew!!

I'm surprised about the call to be honest.
I just flew into LGA the other day. There is a drop box to drop your form off, but no one mans it and it's completely on the honor system. I didn't see many people stopping. But, then again, they just may not have been traveling here on non essential business from a state on the "list".

Funny. My friend had a similar experience, not at LGA though. She was flying back from a state on the list and was looking around to see where she'd have to check in, fill out forms etc - and nobody was around. She waltzed right out of the airport without being stopped....

Re: Questions about self quarantine
When I returned from a trip to Florida, only I was asked to quarantine. My husband -who didn’t travel with me- was free to go about business as usual.
I was contacted daily via text. A friend of mine had someone show up at their house.

Questions about self quarantine
Quarantine means that you cannot be out in public. That means - no supermarket, no walks etc. The furthest you can go is your own backyard, or the curb to put out your garbage. Years ago my DD had whopping cough and we were quarantined by the Suffolk County Department of Health as a result. They called the house phone - not a cell - to make sure we were home. The rules for isolation within the home were obviously different (no need for separate bedroom w/bathroom, and the whole garbage bag thing) - but not being out in public is what quarantine means.
