For those who get the flu shot_UPDATE IN OP

Are you going earlier this year?

I usually wait until Mid October to get mine but I have a physical tomorrow & feel like I should just get it done early. I’ve heard a few people mention getting it earlier than normal just to be ready for anything (ya know, 2020)

Anyone else plan on getting it sooner than later or no change in plans

UPDATE:
Dr wants me to wait until mid October. That’s what he’s doing and advising all of his patients the same. Something like what another poster said about it being a longer flu season. So I’m gonna listen to him and wait.

Re: For those who get the flu shot

I always get it sooner than later so I guess no change. If you are planning to get it I wouldn’t hesitate when you have the chance because flu shots tend to go into shortage and also who knows if you’ll want to enter a doctors office by that time if there is an surge in COVID.

I'm usually very slow to respond to flu vax season...like a January-er but this year we are getting it now because, like you said, 2020

For those who get the flu shot

I had a routine GP visit last week, and I normally get my flu shot early, but he said the CDC was recommending getting the shot in late Sept, early Oct, so we're at the start of the "ideal time" to get the vaccine. There was also a delay in the office getting shots, so I'll probably get mine in a few weeks.

I haven't made a plan for myself to get it but my kids have check ups in 2 weeks and I'll request that they get it then.

Re: For those who get the flu shot

honestly, i'm not one to normally get the flu shot. i got it last year because there was a new baby in the family and i was hoping to do a lot of baby holding.

now that 2020 has hit us between the eyes, i believe i'm going to keep up the practice. i might go this weekend.

last year, i got it at my local cvs. that's the plan for this year.

I usually get it in Mid Oct. I mentioned getting it earlier to my doctor and she would rather see her patients get it later, as the immunity wanes, so when you may really need it in Jan or Feb, you may not have that much immunity. I have mine scheduled for the end of Oct.

I was listening to Doctor Radio last week and one doctor said he already got his. Another guest mentioned what I just said, so this doctor, said Yes for my high risk patients, they get a second dose later on.

Everyone is pushing people to get it sooner., Is it to make sure everyone gets it, and there is no rush or shortage when everyone decides later in Oct?
I personally feel (with no medical degree) that this flu season may be milder since we are wearing masks and distancing. But no one is going to go on air and say that, because, you never know. Like you said, it's 2020.
Let us know what you decide.

i can't remember the doctor... on npr, i heard an interview about the pandemic/flu combo.

the dr said that because there was so little travel in 2020, the southern hemisphere had a really light flu season. they're expecting the same for the northern hemisphere... add mask wearing and social distancing, and they are expecting it to be the "best" year.

BUT... he STRONGLY advised people to get the flu shot. the dr being interviewed said that because of his age, he qualifies for the "senior" shot and he already got his.

i thought it was in interesting interview and it helped convince me to get it again, this year.

Thank you for that. Yes it is interesting- esp about the southern hemisphere. Glad to hear that.

Re: For those who get the flu shot_UPDATE IN OP

We got ours last week. DH had his physical and he got it, and the next day we needed to pick up a prescription at CVS, so I got it as well as DS. We usually get it in October, but since they were offering we decided to do it right away.

This is interesting because one year my DD had her flu shot in like Oct I want to say and in April my DH got the flu. A few days later she came down with symptoms and we had her tested and she tested positive for flu.
I said to the Dr, oh I guess the strain wasn't one that was in the shot because she had her flu shot.
And the Dr said, perhaps, but also she had the shot so long ago and it's April now and the immunity does wane over time.
So it could have been either/or, who knows.

For those who get the flu shot_UPDATE IN OP

I just went for my physical today and I got my flu shot; I usually get it around this time. I have not had any issues in the past with getting the flu.

Re: For those who get the flu shot_UPDATE IN OP

My sons I usually get in September - ASAP. Me usually in Oct./Nov. because I used to get it at my job. Since I’m not working I will get ASAP because I want to avoid the mad rush that happens for the shot and when people start getting sick.

I’m going to the doctors today, if they have it, I’m going to get it.

I usually get it late Sept/early October. I got it today. No sense in waiting as the kids are back in school already.

DH and I usually get it in mid-October, but we actually just got it Monday because my mom's doctor told her that mid-late September is the ideal time this year. I guess they all have different theories.

Thanks for the idea. I got mine at my appointment today and actually scheduled my sons since he was with me. So that’s done!
