Town of Hempstead storm damage
Does anyone know - I left the town a VM and their website is not clear.
A tree between the sidewalk and street fell into the street during isias crushing a neighbors truck. This tree was right on the property line between me and my neighbor.
The town finally came in sept and removed the stump but about 10 feet of sidewalk and curb is badly damaged.
My neighbor is asking us to split cost of sidewalk repair which would be fair but I want to first confirm it’s my responsibility.
They put some kind of (assuming) illegal drain pipe there when they did some backyard work. I don’t want to have to pay for their choice in pipework but if I need to repair half the sidewalk I will.
No one from the town has contacted us and since they’ve removed the tree and stump I just assumed we were waiting on them for the sidewalk.

In the Town of Hempstead, abutting property owners are responsible for the repair and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, and trees along the roadway. From time to time, by complaint only, the Town of Hempstead will require property owners to repair these areas in order to provide and safe and walkable right-of-way zone. (this sounds like it is split)
Call 489-5000 Highway Dept. (Larry) The procedure is to get a permit $35 before the work can be done, and do what you can to prevent falls by pedestrians on that chunk of sidewalk until it's fixed

Thanks! Was hoping you would say I’m not responsible lol. I will work with my neighbor to get it taken care of. We are lucky no one was hurt when the tree fell.
