Question re: braces process
I'm taking my son for a consultation next month. Am I supposed to get multiple consultations? Does cost greatly vary between orthodontists?
I haven't actually called my insurance yet because I'm waiting on DH to get the info, but do they typically pay a percentage or give you like an allowance, like $1,000 towards your braces?

We only went for one consultation but others have gone for more. Prices do vary but the better orthodontists seem to be in line.
Most dental insurance provide a lifetime max per person for orthodontics - it’s usually from $1-2k.
My son just got braces and we were quoted around $5k before insurance.
If both you and your DH have dental coverage available it might be a good idea to sign up for both of them if the monthly cost isn’t too excessive. You can add the lifetime maxes from both plans together.
ETA - The lifetime max is per person. And if you switch jobs you may get a new lifetime max per person but if your job switches plans, you don't.

To be honest cost wasn't even discussed at our consultation. Just the fact that she'd need them eventually for her overbite but was still too young and to come back when she lost more baby teeth.
We went to one that takes our insurance.
They also told us that our insurance will not cover a thing until ALL her baby teeth are gone.
I believe our plan pays up to a certain amount for orthodontia an the rest is on us.
But I have no idea what is will cost because they said she is nowhere near ready for them yet at 10 years old.

We went to several consultations because we have 3 dental insurances and wanted to find an ortho who would bill all 3.

Yes some kids do need braces earlier than others and some are actually getting pre-work done now at 9 and 10 years old like pallet expanders etc.
With my DD she has a ton of space to play with in there, so no need for a pallet expander or any pre work. She just has a MASSIVE overbite which I blame on her pacifier addiction.
But the orthodontist said that space is a very good thing when it comes to orthodontia and because of that things will probably shift around before she's ready so we are waiting it out I guess.
Either way i have no choice because the PBA won't approve anything until all baby teeth are gone- and she has 6 more to go

I got braces in my mid 40s a couple of years ago... and it was about $5k.
That's including retainer costs and getting my gums burned around my teeth. The smell is gross btw.
I was in a program because I was a case study for my dentist so I did get a discount. I don't think my insurance covered much. Just x rays.

We went for 2 consultations but this was at the recommendation of my DD’s dentist. She ended up getting a palate expander and now wears a retainer at night to keep her teeth in place until the rest of her baby teeth fall out. The orthodontist we chose is on the conservative side and gave use pricing on the spot . The other consultation we went to had us make another appointment 2 weeks after to just go over pricing and it kind of felt like a tooth factory.

We went for 3 consultations and they were all around 5K. They all suggested we wait until his baby teeth fell out. We went with LI Ortho/li straight smiles in massapequa. Insurance covered it partially including xrays.

We got 2 consultations.
1- wanted to put them on ASAP, for slightly longer amount of time and about $8k.
2- wants to wait and see how his 12 year molars come in to see if the teeth shift regarding correcting some of the position. 1 1/2 or less of braces. $6-7k
We went with the 2nd approach, but not because it was cheaper. We liked her approach better.

What do u mean they burned ur gums? Why?
Because some teeth were pulled down a little more on one side. so to make the other side even, they scaled them back.
