I don't know, I feel like we are pretty open in NY (with the exception of NYC which is just another animal due to the population density of a huge city) But DH goes to the gym again, nail and hair salons are open, restaurants are open for indoor dining, you can sit at a bar (yeah you have to order food, but in NYC you can't even sit at a bar at all) movie theaters have opened, my daughter goes to school 5 days a week in person, malls are open, hell even strip clubs are open in NYC! I don't think NY is all that restricted right now. And certainly in way better shape than anywhere else....
So many are still jobless as their places are opening at smaller percentages or never reopened. Not all schools are 5 days. Yes many things are back to normal but we are not fully open that we can act like we did before this. Many places even close earlier and bars have the chance of getting their liquor license revoked so it has become harder to be social if you were before.
No I get it. Things are NOT back to normal at all. I still can't go work in an office. Restaurants still struggle with the capacity limits, etc. But compared to NYC or other states with stricter restrictions I feel like we are better off. And compared to where we were in the spring t's a huge improvement.

Of course we can't act like we did before March 15th. The pandemic isn't over. I say we take what we can get. My kids are lucky enough to be in school five days, but even the kids who are in school 2-3 days a week, it is better than nothing. If their school had to go remote, I would be very upset, but if they went hybrid, I would be ok with it. I am devastated for restaurant owners. I do think NYC should be allowed to up indoor dining to 50%. But 100%? No. As for being social, maybe because my kids are still young so I didn't go out to bars much even before COVID, but DH & I have been seeing friends since June. We stay outside and wear masks, but we are together. We are actually having two other couples over Saturday night. We have the fire pit and we will space out and have a nice time. It is not perfect, but it is MUCH better than it was March, April, and May. So I will take it.

Listen as long as my DD is in school, I'm happy. It has made a HUGE difference in her mental health as well as mine. The education she is getting this year is night and day from the spring. I'll take it!!

WOW, that was like one incident. How about all the looting and rioting, and destruction that has been going on for months by the the Democrats!!!!
And by a mentally insane person who did something similar in 2014. Bad example compared to the left riots and even up to last night.
Proof?
She's an imbecile, don't even bother. I think the best we can do is not engage/respond to her...

Re: Biden question
I have an honest question. It seems like Biden’s main plan to handle covid is a mask mandate and contact tracing. But....don’t we have that now, at least in the northeast, where numbers are rising again? And also, we are told that the latest infections are not from gyms and restaurants and schools but are from small private gatherings. So even with a mask mandate, do you think a group of friends/family in a house on a Saturday night are going to start wearing masks? I just honestly do not understand what is going to change under Biden unless he DOES force a lockdown?

I think he’s going to use a scientific, numbers based approach. Europe has many areas locked down. No one should be surprised if that happens here. But I do think it will be localized - like zip codes over certain thresholds the way Cuomo is approaching it.
People need to wear masks and practice personal responsibility. That is how we avoid a shut down.
I know people hate it but the best way to resume confidence and avoid deaths is quick and concentrated action to get it under control. We need to do that before we hit levels like we did in March. Places spiking right now need to shut down.

Okay BUT what is going to be different under Biden? People who aren't wearing masks now certainly are not going to start wearing them because Biden says so. So basically it sounds like you agree that he WILL do lockdowns?

Biden question
I think certain states NEED to be locked down, and states in a position to have their hospitals overwhelmed will be shut down, but not across the board. For example, if he were president now, states such as Texas, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Utah...they would be locked down. But even in Europe, lockdowns are different than they were in the spring. Schools are open, restaurants open during the day, but starting at 6 pm delivery/takeout only. Now that certain places like schools and stores have shown they are not super spreaders, they are more likely to stay open in the event of another shutdown. Europe now deems schools essential.

This is what I think too.
There’s a lot more known about the virus now and a lot more testing. We don’t need a blanket country shut down. We need local shutdowns to get the virus under control and the rest of the country to try to do maintenance like NY has been doing since this summer. I think there will be phases created based on science and national protocalls to help places stay open. The goal should be on preserving this maintenance phase and avoiding the need to shut down but sadly manly places today meet those thresholds.
Australia has done a great job at this and so have many other countries. It’s not impossible and will be a lot better in the long run.

What WON'T be different? He'll respect Fauci and other scientists. He will actually MAKE A PLAN. He will address the nation coherently. He will put the money where it needs to go to mitigate this. He will put actual smart people in charge.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/21/joe-biden-lockdown-us-coronavirus-400126
“I would shut it down; I would listen to the scientists,” Biden told ABC’s David Muir in a joint interview with his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, to air Sunday. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to save lives.”
But many scientists have said a complete lockdown is not necessary IF we have a national mask mandate and balance the economy with virus control. No scientist has ever said to lock people in their basements forever.
But you see, NY as a democrat state is still closed in many, many cases.
Sorry, I won't believe it as republican states have reopened and have been fine and NY is losing jobs and homes left and right.
"Fine"? Wow... so I guess your definition of "fine" is "Highest number of cases per day ever" for Texas.
I realize I'll never be able to convince you of facts and science. I just want other people to realize that what you're saying is almost never based on facts, just fear-mongering, conspiracy theory, and extremist beliefs.

Yes, he can. The current administration didn't want to take any action because he thought he could blame it on Democratic governors when/if things went badly. So instead of a national strategy, he threw the ball and left the playing field.
