I guarantee you NYC schools won't reopen until March.

Or next September actually

Wouldn't be surprised. Yet catholic schools in NYC are remaining open, and hope to remain open through June. The DOE should be ashamed of themselves.

Here is a quote from a SCIENTIST! Do we believe an infectious disease specialist? Or the head of a teacher's union? Listen to the EXPERTS!

"Students attending in-person classes have not proved to be major vectors for the coronavirus, said Curran and county Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein.

Children are not spreading the virus in school, officials said, and often it is the socializing of adults and school staff that lead to positive cases.

"The school itself is not the transmitting factor," said Eisenstein, an infectious disease specialist who added that community spread is more often occurring at parties, family gatherings and with young adults interacting with each other without masks."

As an avid science follower I will say this decision has absolutely nothing to do with science so I am unsure what your comment means.

I'm a "science pearl clutcher" and I would say that I do not recall seeing anyone on here posit that deBlasio follows science.Chat Icon

Seriously though - no one on here, to my knowledge, has stated that the 3% has anything to do with science.

I think we all understand that it's the teacher's union, and whether they should have that much power is a whole different debate.

For that matter, I WORK in a NYC school and think this is extreme. However, I do think that NYC needs different standards than LI due to population density, transportation issues, etc.

I'll continue to maintain that our FEDERAL government, which I think is what most people talk about when they make this reference, does not follow the science and that is causing people to die.

So really it’s the teachers unions??!! It’s ridiculous and I know it’s not all NYC teachers that want this I know some that work in the city and they want to be in school!!

From his conference today I heard Cuomo say he left each school district to determine what threshold will
Be to close so they can go by that. It will only be overridden if a district is on an ornate zone then they have to do what he he stated.

I meant that this decision flies in the face of the science so I just expect similar levels of outage among the loudly pro science people (I consider myself pro science). To be clear the source of my ire is DiBlasio and the UFT. I just hope people are appropriately outraged because this is outrageous.

The DOE teachers I know are outraged by this. Mulgrew is not a doctor, nor is he a scientist or epidemiologist. He is given WAY too much power, IMO. I get wanting everyone to stay safe, but when the positivity rate in schools is less than 1%, what are you doing here?

This!!! I’m also in Nyc schools and think it should be higher but Nyc is also another ball of wax and 3% can easily be 20% within 2 weeks, imo

As per a friend, it now seems that Riverhead School District closed til Jan 11th

This entirely inaccurate. They are delaying bringing the kids back for full time instruction and will continue the hybrid model until Jan 11th. Here is today's letter from the superintendent

November 18, 2020
Dear Riverhead Community,
I hope this letter finds each of you safe and healthy. As you may have heard or read, COVID-19 infection rates in Suffolk County and across the nation are on the rise. This has many concerned about what the coming weeks mean for holiday plans and the ability to keep schools and businesses open.

Since September’s school opening, the Riverhead Central School District has had 34 reports of positive COVID cases between staff and students with two additional cases reported today. As of this afternoon, only one of these cases may have been the result of school spread. Even though our protocols of mask wearing, cleaning and sanitizing, and social distancing are working, we have still been forced to close our schools at times over the past month.
Currently, the sample sizes of the individuals tested in our community are just too small to truly understand the extent to which COVID-19 exists.

With the assistance of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services and
the Suffolk County Executive’s office, the Riverhead Central School District will take the following action in an effort to promote public health in Riverhead.

• We will initiate a voluntary in-school testing program to test approximately 20 percent of the school population (staff, students, faculty) over a two week period. This would involve a Rapid Test,
administered in our schools by clinically-trained personnel associated with the Suffolk County
Department of Health Services. The tests are being provided at no cost to the District by Suffolk County.
Testing is voluntary and I hope you will consider allowing your child to be tested. You can consent by
clicking and completing the Willingness to Test Survey which you can find here. Your response to this survey does not bind you to your response when testing begins. If you consent to your child being tested, you will be asked to complete a Testing Consent Form. Please click here for a Frequently Asked Questions document.

We are also working with Suffolk County to create a community testing site for those who are not exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. More information will be shared about this site as soon as it is available. We intend to begin testing on Friday, November 20 and I invite you to complete your Willingness to Test Survey as soon as possible.

Tomorrow I will be hosting two webinars to further discuss this information and answer any questions that you may have. Please join a webinar at 12:00 p.m.which will be presented in both English and in Spanish or at 4:00 p.m.which will be presented in English. These will be recorded for those who are unable to attend.

You may have read about Governor Cuomo’s “Micro-cluster Initiative” where areas with higher levels of
positive COVID cases may be designated as Yellow, Orange, or Red zones. In those zones, testing is required for schools to remain open for in-person instruction and certain restrictions are placed in the community to decrease interaction and slow the spread. You can read more about the micro-cluster initiative here. While we have not been designated as a micro-cluster, COVID-19 positivity rates over the last week in Riverhead have the attention of county health officials. If our community was to experience more days with a test positivity rate like we have seen, we could be at risk of being designated as a micro-cluster.

It is time to be proactive to assure that the positivity rates in Riverhead accurately depict the true circumstances. In order to keep schools and businesses safely open for as long as we can, we need to work together to figure out the cause of our high community positivity rate. In order to do that, we must increase the sample size of the
tested population. I appreciate your consideration to allow yourself or your child to participate in this testing initiative. Together we can slow the spread in our community. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to
email me at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Christine Tona
Interim Superintendent

I work in a Suffolk County school and we are hoping for the best, but preparing to close and it has absolutely nothing to do with the teacher's union. Suffolk County is on the brink of going into the yellow zone (could be as early as Friday). Testing of 20% of the school population will need to happen weekly in order to keep schools open. We do not have the capacity to do that. Without that widespread testing, the schools cannot stay open. We have had more memos and meetings with no clear answers because the districts aren't getting the answers from the higher ups.

I do know I was told to have my students take some materials home every day so they wouldn't be overwhelmed when we shut down. None of us wants this, I have had anxiety and stress like never before thinking about what my life could be like next week teaching from home while hoping to help my six year old daughter on her seven google meets a day. You know what is going to be sacrificed-her education, while I am teaching other people's children. I would much rather be in my classroom while my own children are in their classrooms. Spreading isn't happening in schools, we have done everything we possible can to prevent that. Spread is happening in communities by people that can't follow the rule and those same people will be once again bashing teachers when their kids are sent home and taught on a computer. It's just so sad and disheartening.

The closure for NYC has everything to do with the teachers union. They agreed to and set a 3% limit so the teachers woudn't strike in September. This is regardless of any 20% testing options out there. Once 3% hit, automatic closure.

Schools in Monroe County NY have already begun the 20% testing, so there must be a procedure. They’ve published results as well.
The state provides all the tests as far as I know.

Nobody is demonizing doctors or teachers.
Nobody. Enough already. Where do you see anyone demonizing a doctor? Do you just make this shitt up to fit your narrative?
This move was strictly due to a deal DeBlasio made with the head of the Teacher's UNION. Not based on any SCIENCE or anything a DOCTOR said or recommended.
Several teachers on this thread and in real life are disgusted by this move because it makes zero sense. Not one person here demonized them. In fact everyone commiserated with them.

NYC SCHOOLS

Make no mistake, the NYC decision was entirely due to the UFT. I can't speak for any decisions being made by any other region of the state. But the UFT is extremely powerful, and it was done without any input from teachers or parents- both of which Cuomo claim had to be on board with any opening or closing decision.
Then Cuomo goes on some tangent about schools in Buffalo when being specifically asked about NYC schools. He was rude, nasty, and condescending. Everyone has lost their ever loving minds, I am waiting for the world to explode.

Based on our latest board meeting, it’s county wide. Suffolk (unless they go down) will enter yellow Friday, Nassau Saturday.

We were told tests would cost $80/test plus the pay of someone to administer. In a small district, that would still be 500 tests/2 weeks, or 40k. As a result, I’m preparing for a closure starting next week.

Wow. Thanks for the info. But if we are already 3% wouldn’t we automatically go to orange zone? How long would yellow last? I just wish it were clearer, it really seems like he makes it up as he goes along.

By “We” do you mean “you” with your passive aggressive and arrogant posts you constantly put on here that everyone skirts around like they didn’t even see it? You don’t even post anything positive, the only negative in this world to you is about Covid. How did you live your life before Covid?

With all the destruction, murders, institutionalization and let’s not forget racial injustice that’s has happened for years in this country? The world was a dark place way before January 2020. Where was all this outrage about bullying, injustice, government corruption, lack of science and data then?? Or was that ok because it fit your privileged lifestyle and narrative?

Don’t fool yourself hun, media/news is still the problem. But glad to see you finally learned how to use the quote feature to directly address someone. Chat Icon

3% seems to be a very low threshold to close all schools.
That's a bit crazy

Totally agree. I just saw a commercial for that Casino in Queens is open? How is that open, but schools are closed?

Two words - Teachers Union

Perfectly said. We are reaping what we have sown. This is from people playing don't ask/don't tell with their symptoms, avoiding testing, and failing to follow gathering, distancing, and mask requirements.

But we will keep harassing, abusing, and demonizing doctors and teachers. Chat Icon

700 school districts choose their closing threshold. Cuomo gave them a range. NYC picked a range and they closed when they reached the range. 3% was a number provided by Cuomo. Be mad a Cuomo.

NYC has 1.5 million children across 5 boroughs. The numbers in some communities are creeping north of 5%.

NYC schools are learning in cohorts. My school has 4 cohorts. Kids are coming to school 6 days a month. Our cohorts are down to 4 kids a day, because parents are switching to fully remote because the numbers in their neighborhoods are increasing.
