Does anyone understand how this micro cluster color zone strategy would work on Long Island? Would ALL of Suffolk county close or would it be targeted areas by zip codes? I read the website but it is still not clear. It seems like they are measuring positivity rate by the entire county, however if most of the positives are, for example, in East Hampton, then why should Northport close?
Based on our latest board meeting, it’s county wide. Suffolk (unless they go down) will enter yellow Friday, Nassau Saturday.
We were told tests would cost $80/test plus the pay of someone to administer. In a small district, that would still be 500 tests/2 weeks, or 40k. As a result, I’m preparing for a closure starting next week.
Wow. Thanks for the info. But if we are already 3% wouldn’t we automatically go to orange zone? How long would yellow last? I just wish it were clearer, it really seems like he makes it up as he goes along.
I think if the school testing proves the student/teacher % positive is not in the “yellow” numbers, they can remain open.

This is true. Our super flat out told us it won’t be an option for our district bc of price, and bc if we show at or above the yellow numbers with our testing, we have to close or continue the 40k it will cost to test 20% of those who attend.

NYC SCHOOLS
For everyone who is unhappy with the closing, do your part to keep the infection rate low in your area. At this point, most of the state will be yellow within the next week. It will take 2-4 weeks to see a decrease in numbers. With the holidays, it will probably take longer.
Albany County currently has more covid related hospitalizations than they did all spring yet I see still people in my area carrying on as business as usual. Sure they wear masks in stores, at school, etc, but not at the park or when gathering with others outside of their household. My neighbor regularly has big gatherings. I’m not calling the police on him or anything but this is part of the problem.

3% seems to be a very low threshold to close all schools. That's a bit crazy
Totally agree. I just saw a commercial for that Casino in Queens is open? How is that open, but schools are closed?
Two words - Teachers Union
I work in a Suffolk County school and we are hoping for the best, but preparing to close and it has absolutely nothing to do with the teacher's union. Suffolk County is on the brink of going into the yellow zone (could be as early as Friday). Testing of 20% of the school population will need to happen weekly in order to keep schools open. We do not have the capacity to do that. Without that widespread testing, the schools cannot stay open. We have had more memos and meetings with no clear answers because the districts aren't getting the answers from the higher ups.
I do know I was told to have my students take some materials home every day so they wouldn't be overwhelmed when we shut down. None of us wants this, I have had anxiety and stress like never before thinking about what my life could be like next week teaching from home while hoping to help my six year old daughter on her seven google meets a day. You know what is going to be sacrificed-her education, while I am teaching other people's children. I would much rather be in my classroom while my own children are in their classrooms. Spreading isn't happening in schools, we have done everything we possible can to prevent that. Spread is happening in communities by people that can't follow the rule and those same people will be once again bashing teachers when their kids are sent home and taught on a computer. It's just so sad and disheartening.
Same here. I work in a Suffolk County school district, and we just had a meeting yesterday in the event that we close. We were going to try to bring the kids back 4 days a week, while I work in a big school district. The Superintendent decided to hold off till Jan. 29th. I want nothing more than to have our kids back full time. I see how it is hurting them mentally, socially and academically. I am lucky my one son is in school 5 days a week. But my other son is 2 days. It has NOTHING to do with the union.

This is my issue. We have been doing our part, because my kids being in school is more important to me than anything else.
We’ve seen nobody other than our parents indoors. No play dates. No restaurants. No friends. None of the multiple parties we’ve been invited to. Any activities my kids have done (which are few) are properly distanced and outdoors only. My kids don’t go to stores. I barely go to stores. They didn’t even go trick or treating for Pete’s sake.
I have one thousand percent done my job. I fully blame other people for not being able to suck up having house parties for the current numbers.

Yup. It sucks. Come January, it will be an entire year since I’ve stepped foot in my parent’s house (or them in mine). They live 15 mins away.
And now that schools are on the brink of closing, people are just going to throw in the towel for Thanksgiving. Which will snowball into a nightmare 3-4 months ahead.

Stop watching and listening to the media. You are falling into EXACTLY what they want you to believe.
The media ALL have a script that they follow(you can google the key words they all use).
The virus will never go away, just like everything else in this world.
Be careful, as you are with every other virus, but people are suffering and will suffer more with another lockdown than getting the virus that they haven't gotten in the last 9 months and were around people not in their own household.

This is not Suffolk County, this is NYC teachers union and it 100 percent the reason in NYC. You don't have to convince me about the spread. I wanted the whole country locked down in March, no going out period...where if you do try to go out the military stops you...you know like they did in other countries that have 0 covid cases and 0 restrictions because they took care of it immediately.

I have a graduate degree so I am not what most people would consider uneducated. What I meant by my comment was that anyone who believes in “following the science” should be outraged because this decision does not, at all, and is purely political and speaks volumes as to the outrageous power of the UFT. We don’t actually disagree.

Re: NYC SCHOOLS
We have been doing our part too, and it is awful to watch things like in person school taken away from some. We have used this time to teach our kids some lessons, like the fact that we can only control our own behavior, not that of other people. We have also been talking to them about all that we have to be thankful for, and how much we can still do for and with others, even in the midst of restrictions. We talk about how full and how good their lives are. It is helpful, and the kids pick.up on a lot and learn resilience.
Meanwhile, the CDC has revised its guidelines, and as we learn more about how this is developing, debates are breaking out among leaders about what is best. I wish people's disregard for the regulations hadn't put us in this position with the rising numbers to begin with. It is hard for anyone to stay on top of all of this.

Not aiming this to YOU but that statement makes no sense as you can be as book smart as you want to be and not have any common sense and not be educated in things that others who don't have degrees know.

The closure for NYC has everything to do with the teachers union. They agreed to and set a 3% limit so the teachers woudn't strike in September. This is regardless of any 20% testing options out there. Once 3% hit, automatic closure.
I interpreted her statement to mean the potential closure of her Suffolk school has nothing to do with the teacher's union. Not the city schools.

She didn’t say I was an idiot. That would be subjective. She said I was “uneducated” and so my response was actually relevant. And yes I suppose one can be self-taught and considered “educated.” To that point, I have three children who had been attending NYC public school until I pulled them out in August bc I knew exactly what crap the UFT was going to pull. So the idea that I have “no idea what’s going on,” but she does, is laughable.
The point of my very misunderstood (must be my own fault if nearly everyone misunderstood it) was that this decision follows politics, not science, and that I hoped all the loudly pro science people out there are equally outraged by this.

What makes me angry is my DD goes to a Catholic school and all the Catholic schools are remaining open. Their school is currently in a yellow zone- literally their parking lot is in a red zone. But sure, you can still send your kids to school, if you can afford it. It's so unfair to the parents who rely on the public school system.

NYC SCHOOLS
I feel like now that all the kids are home, they are gonna hang around each other all over NYC and make the spread worse. At schools, we've been able to keep them separated and there's a routine in place for them where the spread is contained.
To be honest, i really didn't think they were gonna do this. I was hoping the city would close for 2 weeks following thanksgiving just for precautionary reasons, but now I feel like we're never gonna go back
ETA: Not really defending the UFT in this, but just keep in mind that this 3% threshold was something decided back in like July. At that time, I feel it was 100% justified and fair. We had literally no PPE in buildings and the city had absolutely nothing in place to keep schools safe at that time. I will say, however, that I am pleasantly surprised at how well my building has been operating and how little spread there is. We have only had 1 case this whole time, and it was a parent of a child. That 3% should have been evaluated and maybe increased to 5 IMO.

NYC has 1.5 million children across 5 boroughs. The numbers in some communities are creeping north of 5%.
I live in a community with 6% positive rate in NYC. We have 24 positive cases. In my son's school, in the heart of that community, there were THREE positive cases. And two were teachers, which doesn't necessarily mean they live there.
There are a few different ways to be looking at these numbers and everyone skews them to be what they want them to be.

I think the term anti-science is something coined by the left side to describe anyone on the right that is skeptical of information put forth by the media in the current environment. I think most people believe in science, in general, but some are reluctant to listen to what is reported on the news nowadays because there has been so much misinformation reported in the past however many years. I think the term is way overused and frankly it's getting somewhat annoying. But that's just my two cents.
