Re: what's your willpower trick?

I was used to waiting for things growing up so while it can be very hard, I am able to have the willpower now as an adult.

With food, I have none. And I am laughing at the comment, if you still have halloween candy, then you have willpower. I just bought russell stover caramel santa's today and I have a feeling, they will be gone by Thanksgiving! As far as willpower with buying things, I do make a list and I try not to be impulsive. What I want or feel I need one day, the desire is sometimes gone the next time I look into it.

oh so what I do for Halloween candy is I make a gingerbread house for thanksgiving using all of the left over Halloween candy.

I am very hit or miss when it comes to willpower. I can save but oh chocolate calls my name.

When I don’t want to snack after dinner, I go brush my teeth. That usually staves it off.

use to have no trouble denying myself food, meals and desserts. No so much lately maybe because I hit that age "the change is starting" lol.

As far as buying anything. I tend to never buy or treat myself. I remind myself, there are more important things to put my money towards, instead of clothing, pocket books, makeup,etc

Re: what's your willpower trick?

Here are two things that work SOMETIMES for me for food.

Pick a really healthy food that you like, or at least tolerate. Definitely not something you love. For me it's apples. If I go looking for food I ask myself if I am "apple hungry." As in, am I really hungry enough to eat an apple. If not, it means I'm not really hungry and I walk away. If so, then I go ahead and eat whatever.

This does not work all the time, believe me. Sometimes I really do walk away and sometimes I say to myself "no I am not apple hungry but I also don't care" lol.

Another thing I heard years ago that sometimes does the trick - don't wait until you're full to stop eating. Instead stop when you no longer feel hungry.

Re: what's your willpower trick?

No willpower for eating at all. More like a habit to workout... as soon as I wake up I put on my gym clothes and make the bed, that way I won't go back to bed and I do my work out in the morning.

Same! I also put on my sports bra in the mornings to make me work out or do some exercise.
Don't buy a ton of junk food in the house and when I give the kids snacks or desserts I don't give a lot where I'll wind up eating their leftovers. LOL
My kids aren't big eaters anyway so it helps.

I also hold out on coffee as my reward so if I can run on the treadmil first thing in the morning or follow a video I've been doing then I can enjoy my coffee. I joined a free youtube workout video and follow this woman. It's free and it's a 12 week program and had friends join so it motivates us to get in 5 workouts a week and we text in the group chat when we're done. It really has helped me bc when I see someone is starting their week I know I better to keep up.

sorry to answer with a question...
but

willpower for what?
willpower to do that one thing every so often or to establish a habit?

if it's to establish a better-for-you habit, i learned a lot from reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.

when wanting to start a good habit
* make it obvious
* make it easy

the four steps to a habit are
* trigger
* craving
* action
* reward
if you can break that loop up, you can change something you believe is almost automatic.

when wanting to end a bad habit
* make it hidden
* make it hard

examples of these would be:
* good - want to drink more water - place a glass of water next to your night stand so you can start sipping as soon as you wake up

* bad - want to quit eating as soon as you walk in through the door after work - put all the snack foods in a different part of the kitchen/pantry this way you make the brain have to work a little harder and it will give you just enough time to catch yourself and remember what your goal is.

i STRONGLY suggest reading this book. it's helped me a lot in a few habits and i'm incorporating it in more things i do.

understood. no details need to be given.
i strongly advocate that you read this book. i have a copy and also listened to it on audible. i've also joined an atomic habits fb group that helps to give me ideas as to how other people are incorporating the principles into their every day life.
