Horrible Headaches- who to see exactly?
Long story short, 2 1/2 years ago i started suffering from terrible sinus headaches. They got progressively worse. I would wake up with them, go to bed with them and they would last days, sometimes weeks. Towards the end, i probably had them for 3 weeks out of the month. For months.
I had sinus surgery 10 years ago. I went to an ENT. Was scoped. Regular doctor. Gyno. Had bloodwork. MRI. Cat scan. Mamo. Everything came back clear and fine. I am in peri-menopause and have been for almost 10 years. I am 39.
Went off birth control March 2019 and they progressively decreased a lot each month. THANK GOD.
Now i have about 2-3 days a month when i get them. I track them. It's sometimes right before my period or a few days after.
But they're bad. I get nauseous. Want to lay in a dark room with my hands over my eyes. I don't believe they are migraines. I feel it in my sinuses. It's hard to function with them. I work full time and have 3 kids. My husband works rotating shifts so he's not home a lot.
Anyway, any recommendation on a type of doctor to see about them? Do i go to a neurologist? Do i go to a hormone doctor? someone else?
**I really don't want to go to a neurologist and they throw medications at me. I need to function. I need to drive. So i can't be taking heavy duty stuff and i don't want to unless they know the cause. So i'm not sure where to start first. TIA

Horrible Headaches- who to see exactly?
Neurologist, sounds like migraines, try acupuncture, diet changed.
Sinuses can trigger migains and vice versa

Re: Horrible Headaches- who to see exactly?
There are new migraine meds that you can function on and drive with etc. I'd say a neurologist to be honest but let them know you need to function and need a drug you can take mid day.
Fyi...my migraines mimic sinus headaches a lot. It's a known thing with migraines.
I've also started a supplement regime that has pretty much eliminated my migraines completely

Look into Riboflavin. There is actually one that says Migraine formula on it on Amazon.
Feverfew
Magnesium
CoQ10
Last summer I was getting them like crazy. Since adding in the Riboflavin and Feverfew I haven't had one since the end of the summer last year.
As far as a neurologist I haven't seen one in a long time so I don't have a rec. I am.so.much better now with the supplements that I haven't needed meds. But I have read up on the new ones I see ads for since I always am interested in new treatments god forbid mine start up again

Horrible Headaches- who to see exactly?
This happened to me two years ago, I had a headache daily for months. Someone recommended this and it worked...it has ingredients Nell mentioned. And, you should see a neurologist. they will do a cat scan/MRI first then take it from there. Ugh..not sure if link will work .. It is called MigreLief...you can get on amazon.

Re: Horrible Headaches- who to see exactly?
Ugh I get them too. Its almost like I can set a 3 day clock to them from start to finish. It's usually right after my period starts or occasionally before ovulation. They cause me to be nauseous sometimes diarrhea and its like a sharp inescapable pain and pressure behind usually my right eye. I don't know what's worse the actual pain or the GI issues/foggy head that seem to go along with it. Advil doesn't really even stop them. I went to a neurologist but they mostly recommended rescue meds that just make me feel weird in different ways. I wish I had an answer for you. Mine started after my first kid was born (when I stopped bfing and worsened after my 2nd weaned). These aren't quite like the class migraine w/ aura i used to get as a kid that were horrific but short lived (1 day usually)

I know this is an old post, but are you on birth control? I found that I got the WORST hormonal migraines when I was on the pill. When I went off the pill 8+ years ago, they went away.

I went off a year and a half ago and they significantly decreased a lot! But still getting 3-4 straight days of them once a month.

Nope not on birth control. Still getting 2-3 day long migraines right around my period (shortly before or after it starts). Did you find anything that has helped you? They are nasty and even worse than the actual head pain is the symptoms that go with it (brain fog, nausea, light/sound sensitive etc)

I literally stopped my migraines completely (knock on wood, it's been a year and a half now) with feverfew, riboflavin and magnesium supplements. Literally life changing.

Sure. I take 300 mg of Feverfew 400 mg of Riboflavin 500 mg of Magnesium Daily I also take 300 mg of CoQ10 which has also been studied in migraine prevention.
Prior to adding the Feverfew and Riboflavin I was still getting migraines, but less frequently and less intense. Since adding the Riboflavin and Feverfew they have stopped completely for a year and a half. Not one. In fact the Riboflavin I take actually says Migraine Complex on it since it has been shown to help migraines (it's just Riboflavin though so any brand will do at a 400 mg dose) This was all done via my own research. The doctors just want to put me on drugs. I don't do well with drugs and to be honest, I prefer a more natural approach when possible. Of course, if this hadn't helped and my migraines were debilitating I would look into drugs. But since I'm doing so well with just these supplements I'll stick with them.

I've suffered from migarines for years and my neuro in NY suggested all 4 of the vitamins/supplements you recommended, down to specific brands. This was about 12 years ago. I'm OOS now but she was one of the best doctors I've ever seen.

I'm telling you- there is something to it. Some kind of deficiency in these vitamins that cause migraines- at least for me. Because taking these daily has completely stopped them for me

THANK YOU!!!! i'm going to ask my doctor about it and look into them.

Can you share with me the dosage and who recommended these to you? I might ask my neurologist at my appt in january.
I can’t find 300mg feverfew. Can you tell me what brand and where you get it from? Thank you!

This is so interesting. I have been taking Magnesium but not the other supplements. Maybe i'll try adding those on since the magnesium alone is not doing it. Thankyou!

Sorry, just saw this- I always forget to check this board. It's from Amazon. And it's 380 mg, sorry! (My eyes are getting old and I really need to get reading glasses apparently! LOL) Feverfew

Yes, I was doing the magnesium and it helped to shorten the duration and frequency, but one summer I was getting them constantly. I did some more research and happened on the feverfew and riboflavin. Not sure which of those is it, or if it's the combination of both, but I haven't had one since!
