I find this so unsettling. Trump pardoned Stephanie Mohr with a history of police abuse but encourages and allows this woman to die at the hands of the US. Montgomery

Yes, I’m entirely uncomfortable with her being executed. What she did was horrible but she was mentally ill and has years of abuse herself as well as brain damage. It sounds like she should be locked up in a mental institution.

I’m not sure how I feel about the death penalty overall. I go back and forth.

I go back and forth on how I feel about the death penalty as well.
I do believe in the UN stance that a person should not be put to death if they are mentally ill or impaired.
I'm so saddened that this woman was put to death when she would not have been in any other administration.

Right. Like the man who killed the Capitol cop last week, would he be put to death? Probably not.

I tend to be pro death penalty but in cases where one can be proved mentally ill or insane it gets a little complicated I guess. But that being said, to commit a crime as sick as cutting a baby from a mother, you would have to be mentally ill to begin with so I am not sure that is a fair defense. Her crime was heinous, part of me believes she deserved the sentence she got. I know that sounds terrible but when I think about the family and the baby that will NEVER know her mother, I can't help but to feel another way.

I completely against the death penalty.
This is one of the reasons why.

There are varying degrees of metal illness. If you dive a little deeper into her life and her diagnosis - if gives you another way to look at it.

She could have spent life behind bars. No one thinks she doesn't deserve punishment but to what extent?

I understand, there are no easy answers. I just keeping thinking that she took another person's life, it's very hard to feel empathy for her situation. It's a sad situation all around.

I agree with you. It's clear cut. I go back and forth about how I feel about the death penalty too.

I go back and forth too.

I really don’t have a moral problem with putting truly evil people to death. I’m a big true crime fan and man, humans are evil.

That being said, similar to others, I do feel morally wrong with the death penalty for those who truly can’t know any better or control themselves.

Since my morality is split a bit, and it’s hard to really know where the line between insane and evil is, I think about it against 2 other reasons:

Deterrent. Does the death penalty help prevent horrible crimes? My understanding is no. Harsher punishments do little to nothing statistically to preventing crime.

Efficiency/cost to society. Is it more effective to use the death penalty vs life in prison? My understanding is that all the appeals and reviews and checks before it happens actually makes it far more costly than life in prison.

So therefore I’m against the death penalty but I don’t feel good about my position. I watch something like the HBO special on the golden state killer and I think “put him to death”. Which I guess is ok, I’m not sure someone should feel good about this topic regardless of what side you are on.

I can never decide one way or another how I feel about the death penalty. What this lady did was so horrific but she was also raped and tortured as a child which changes who you are. Abused and neglected children have severe psychological issues.
