Hyperbaric Accident

The following story has been communicated to Generation Rescue about a tragedy affecting a 4-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and his family.

According to sources, the boy was in a hyperbaric chamber at Ocean Hyperbaric Oxygen clinic today in Florida when the oxygen in the chamber ignited. The exact cause of the fire is not yet reported. At the time the chamber was inflated to 1.75 ATA and 100% oxygen was being used to fill the entire chamber. These settings are uncommon and known to have added safety risks.

Most chambers are pressurized with room air and oxygen is only delivered to the face keeping the oxygen content low and safe throughout the chamber. The clinic uses Sechrist & Vickers hyperbaric chambers, and thus far it appears the accident was caused by human error (technician error). While the technician was a Certified Hyperbaric Technician it seems that safety precautions were not adhered to. The boy is in critical condition. The grandmother is also in the hospital. As we understand this boy had completed 40 dives and was doing so well that his family wanted him to continue hyperbaric therapy.

Very few centers use 100% oxygen to inflate the chamber because of the added risk. The pressures and oxygen levels used at the Ocean Hyperbaric Center in Florida are not typically used or recommended for children with autism.

Hyperbaric oxygen has been shown to safely help many children with autism. Typical treatment levels for autism are from 1.3-1.5 ATA with oxygen levels are 24-30% which means the chamber air is safe and not flammable.

It was a negligent accident. The technician did not follow safety.

but she is supporting and discussing hyperbaric chambers - a lot of families with kids on the spectrum give this a try....

I know many families that do this. It has nothing to do with Jenny or anything about it being wrong. Its a PSA to please be cautious to people who do this because its pure oxygen! I never even thought this could happen and I found it so sad.

I am sorry but I have to disagree. The accident happened because someone did not follow safety procedures.

So if someone recommend radiation or chemo for a cancer patient and a nurse makes a mistake resulting in the death of a patient, whoever mentioned the word radiation is at fault.

People may or may not agree with


Jenny McCarthy but let's not make her

I know first hand what went on here.. First I wuld like to say this Chamber therapy has helped thousands of children with CP, autisum, and severe brain trauma.. I have seen it with my own eyes.. This is a freak accident.. just like a plane crash or something along those lines..

The alligations are alligations.. What i understand went on is the Grandma either was wearing hairspray of had some type of metal on ie: bobby pin or hair clip or something.. They are not frisked by the technician. Unfortuately she signed a release stating she was completely clean of any of the above.. She must have had something on that she didnt realize.. This is devastating.. I pray every day for this family.. The latest i have heard is that the Grandma passed away and the child still remains in critical condition.. I feel so horrible for this family.. God give them strength..

I just want to clarify that this was in no way to knock hyperbaric chambers in any way! I did state to someone's reposnse that Jenny does speak about them, as most parents of kids on the spectrum do... I just never thought anything like this could happen and wanted to share to let people know to be careful.....
