Imo we need no billionaires, less millionaires in government and more average working joes to represent the rest of America's average working joes. How does a billionaire relate to a blue collar construction worker? We also need more young blood. The reason we've gone off the rails as a nation is because of all the old wealthy people in government looking out for themselves.
Exactly!!!!
You can't say that Billionaire CEO's earn their salary, but ex-POTUSs can't earn millions with book deals and speaking deals. You're contradicting yourself again.
No one should make that type of money writing a book or speaking.

Every president's net worth grows by tens of millions after they've held office. People pay a lot of money to hear from former presidents. There's nothing wrong with that. Once out of office they become private citizens. Why shouldn't they capitalize on their experience? That's the beauty of capitalism. Only a handful of other people have been in their shoes.
And book and speaking deals aren't exploiting workers. It's purely supply and demand. They write a book, and X number of people buy it. They aren't like CEOs who pay their workers non-living wages.

Millions of people disagree with you. Who are you to say what a book is worth? Pure supply and demand.

Absolutely. They are literally being paid for their words (written and spoken).

What?? Ok, nevermind. This is obviously a troll comment.
I'm curious if you have a problem with Trump profitting off the presidency? If people wanted to hear stories from the voices in his head...

So based on numerous posts from you, YOU are the only person worthy to declare how much a person should make at a particular job.
Wow, that's an impressive role you have... I'm only making that statement based on YOUR posts.

Re: CEO’s make too much...how about politicians?
The reason we pay the President a life time salary is to prevent them from being influenced by foreign interests. We had a President go bankrupt and seeing that made the other presidents sad for him and his spouse. So they instituted a payment for them. Honestly, just do the research on why it is they are paid. This is or should be common knowledge.

Former presidents also continue to receive intelligence briefings and provide guidance and mentoring to the current president (as long as the current's giant colossal ego will allow it).
They're never really "off the job". Of all the politicians feeding at the public trough I have no issues with former presidents getting paid.
However, this raises a question with the current traitor in chief.

to this point, I want to add that I believe in term limits and no one should go into office just to make money.

Their salaries are under $200k a year. They are not getting rich off of their govt gig. They are getting rich doing speaking arrangements, book deals etc. And many have spouses that have money. So it’s not a clear picture.
Mitch’s wife is rich. Nancy Pelosi’s husband is rich. So the net worth you are seeing isn’t just because they are in the government.
I don’t necessarily agree or disagree but I don’t think under $200k is too much for a salary when people all over our area make that or more.
it's pretty disguising the amount they get paid to speak. Even celebrities, to speak at college graduations is insane.

Ex--presidents, celebrities, sports figures, etc. have been deemed by others to have a very high worth and because of that, they get paid accordingly.
Again, I don't begrudge anyone their money. People who are able to make this kind of money have figured out how to do something the rest of us haven't. Good for them.

Re: CEO’s make too much...how about politicians?
Curious why people think former presidents, celebrities, and athletes earn too much, but CEOs don't. I won't argue that these people may be grossly overpaid because that's not the point. For argument's sake these people are employees. After negotiations, the team owner is the person that decided the athlete was worth millions. The owners themselves are worth BILLIONS. The celebrity is worth this much to the owner because YOU (general) the consumer, says so. As long as YOU keep buying their music and going to see their movies and games they will continue to be paid accordingly. That person has the athletic/artistic/whatever ability to sell tickets, fill stadiums, sell records, books, bring the owners championships, etc. and the day they stop being able to do that is the day they cease having value for the employer. The celebrity/athlete should give up their privacy, train all day for hours on end, have a restricted diet, endure possible career-ending injuries, tour the world away from home and family 90% of the year, bring their employers bags of money AND do it all for little money. If you were a celebrity/athlete how much do you think you would be worth?
Why would anyone care what a university, for example, wants to pay a former president to speak? How does that affect anyone's life?
