Spin off to play date question

I have 2 little ones. I take them to the playground to burn off their energy. Do you make your kids wear their masks at the playground? If it's crowded I do but if it's a few other kids, I don't. I struggle with mask protection v. breathing in the fresh air. I justify the non-mask wearing by CDC guidelines but I go back and forth about it. My own observation is its 50/50 for the kids but usually the adults are masked.

My kids will wear their masks there, but they will slide off their faces & give me a hard time putting them back up. I can't get the perfect fit so I do what I can.

I am a big "no mask outdoors" person but if I were on a playground and other kids were around them playing then I would make them keep the mask on. But when we go hiking, out for a walk, etc we don't mask up, I want to breathe fresh air when I am outdoors.

Same. If there is literally anyone else at the playground they wear a mask. If we're walking around the neighborhood, nope, and we'll cross the street to avoid people. Well, my older one wears masks- she's going to be 5. My DS is under 2 so it would be impossible to keep a mask on that animal. Chat Icon

No and I find that most other parents don't either at the park we go to.

I don't make my kids wear masks at the playground. One tends to do it on his own though (I always have them with me).

Yes if others are there. If no one else is there, I don’t make him, but sometimes he said he likes to as it reminds him not to put his hands near his face.

Exactly this for us.

My kids wear them for the same reason. Plus, it's good because even after we're vaccinated and things reopen and resume more, we will likely still have to wear masks to protect others for quite some time.

Yes I do make my kids wear masks at the playground and it actually upsets me greatly when other kids are not wearing masks. In my experience the few times I have taken my kids to the playround other kids have worn masks.. if they arent it makes me uncomfortable. Kids often get close to eachother on playgrounds so I feel they SHOULD be wearing masks. That being said if we are going on a bike ride or a walk and are not near others outside then I am ok with them not wearing their masks as I agree that the fresh air is good for them.

My DS knows the deal: If others are not wearing masks, we leave. He doesn't even question it at this point. He will actually take the lead.

In a setting where people can not properly socially distance at all times, everyone should be wearing a mask. We are 10 months into this, why is this even still a question?!?!!?

Yes. All of the playgrounds in my area have signs up saying masks are required at all times for anyone over 2.

Yes.

If it were literally just him there I wouldn't but he is past the age when he is willing to stay at a playground by himself lol.

Re: Spin off to play date question

I usually do no masks and ask them to keep their distance from any other kids.

If it's crowded enough to need masks we will find another park.

I don’t. They’re outside and they’re not close enough to kids for me to be concerned. I highly doubt something will happen during the millisecond it’ll take them to pass a kid while going to the slide.

My kids wear masks at playground whether the other kids are are not. Kids dont have the spatial abilities for social distance (at least younger kids) so I want them to protect themselves. I do often see other kids not wearing them though...

I'm so surprised by this. Whenever we've gone to the park every kid and adult over the age of 2 was wearing a mask. Now for the young kids, granted, not always WELL, but the same could be said for the adults.

If we are the only ones there, then no. But if there are other kids, then the masks are on.

Me too. I’m surprised more playgrounds don’t have signs up requiring them. I figured it was a state requirement.

We went for a walk/hike by the harbor yesterday and every single person, child and adult had a mask on and everyone was way more than 6ft apart.

Nope. Only unless it were super crowded. I figure if your at a playground your not too worried about germs. Kids are all touching the same equipment and messing with their masks or they are half down.

I agree completely. My kids always mask up. If I see other kids not wearing masks we leave. Not worth the risk as the kids are always way too close to each other.
It confuses me why people think they shouldnt have to wear it. What is the reasoning???

I do not bring my kids to playgrounds right now. If I had to, they would most definitely wear masks. If other kids were not wearing masks, we would leave. Kids touch playground equipment and then their faces. Kids breath perfectly fine wearing a masks. None of my kids have ever had a problem wearing masks for hours at end outside on hikes. I understand if a child has special needs masks may be an issue.
