PSA for parents .... please stay positive
A local high schooler by us just took his own life this week.
It’s a reminder that our children’s minds are still developing. We ourselves as adults feel a sense of “this is never going to end” “we aren’t living life anymore” etc.... But we know this is temporary and things will be normal again. They sometimes don’t understand, and terms like “new normal” are terrifying for them. Their parents could be struggling financially now. They are home alone all day while they do virtual school. The isolation is real. The fear of never going back to normal is real.
Children listen to adults, whether they overhear us or it’s a conversation with them. Be positive. Let them hear things will get better. Don’t complain when they are in earshot. Be there for them. Let them see friends (whatever your comfort level, let them physically see friends), let them do an activity. Talk about the future.
Most importantly, stop judging others. You never know what a family is going thru.
My heart is breaking right now for this family. We really need to shift focus to mental health.

Same - when I was a Sr in HS, a friend who was a Jr took his life. I had dropped him off the night before. It was so devastating. And a few years ago, a high school student near me took his own life as well.
So sad, thinking of the family.

This is so sad. LittleDiva, that is such great advice. I try to tell DD that this way of life is temporary and things will get better.
My heart breaks for the boy and his family. May they find peace somehow.

My heart goes out to the family. Great advice. Everyone needs to remember that while we may think our children are mature, they are still children and need to feel the comfort, safety and support of their parents.

I work in inpatient mental health in a hospital and also see patients in the medicine service for mental/ behavioral health reasons. Our units have been full day in and day out since they have been open to capacity. Our psych ER has seen an extremely high acuity; much higher and much more violent now than in a very long time. It’s bad. We recognize it’s bad and I know my hospital is looking at the data/ trends. It’s really really tough for everyone and it’s so hard for all, even we see health care/ first responders coming in. It’s bad. When this pandemic started we had 2 physicians come in for mental health reasons in a week which is unheard of usually. Praying for this family

Four years ago multiple children from my district committed suicide. The youngest was in 7th grade. I still think of the boy. There were two seniors and two college kids. They all did it within the same 6 week period. It was a terrible time for everyone here.
