PSA: Parents PLEASE get CPR certified

Hello Ladies...

Its been quite a while since Ive posted but Im an active lurker LOL.

This weekend I had the scariest moment of my life and I wanted to share with you all.

My DH, Sister, DS and myself took a little weekend trip for a couple days. On the way through NJ we stopped for breakfast at our fave Cracker Barrell. The table was buzzing with excitement over our plans and quickly things went sour when our food arrived.

Josh got his usual pancakes and bacon and was happily munching away. The waitress came over and the adults all engaged in conversation with her about the area...blah..blah..blah.

I looked over at Josh who had a panicked look on his face and it was obvious he was choking. Not just down the wrong pipes but truly choking. He was turning blue and not making a sound. My Sister and I jumped into action to try and relieve the obstruction while my husband was alerting that we needed 911. Ive never been so scared in my life as when my blue sons body went limp. My sister and I continued to work on him and Thank God he projectile vomited and was able to breathe again and immediately started crying that he was scared. Thats when my tears started to flow.

My DH, Sister and I have all been Medics for a very long time. I have also been a CPR Instructor for the past 10 years. Its one thing to work on a stranger but its a whole different ballgame when its your own child. Without the training and experience we have I dont know that there would have been the same outcome and I am thankful that my "Mommy Nerves" didnt take over until the ordeal was all over.

The moral of the story is that you never know when you might need these life saving skills or who you will need them for. Please Please Please get yourself trained. There are private classes, hospital classes, and community classes. A split second is all it takes.

Thank you for reading this

What a frightening experience. So glad to hear he's doing ok!! Chat Icon

DH and I actually just took the course this past wknd. We had originally planned to take it when I was pregnant but DD came early and we just put it off (DD is now 10 mos) but I'm so glad we finally went. The instructor said something that really stuck with us. He said the majority of accidents take place at home and if you ever had to perform CPR/the Heimlich/etc it would most likely be on a relative. As horrible as the thought is, I feel better knowing that we will be prepared if God forbid an emergency were to arise.

Re: PSA: Parents PLEASE get CPR certified

thank god you acted quickly and your son is ok.

Dh choked like that at the dinner table when he was a kid and wants us to take the CPR classes. We have to find one near us. His father had to do the heimlich maneuver on him.

Re: PSA: Parents PLEASE get CPR certified

I totally agree, I recently had to pull my baby out of a high chair, and save her from choking. Very scaring. In the hospitals they usually offer birth classes and I know at NSUH they had a bathing class and BFing class... they should think about a CPR/choking class. I'm sure they have them in general, but the nurses on the maternity floor can encourage new mom's to attend. So important.

Thank you for reminding everyone how important knowing CPR is, DH and I take a refresher every 2 years, and my parents are taking a course since they will be watching the new baby.
